[Hatsune Miku cosplay] New Year Lion Dance: Good Luck in the Year of the Horse

This New Year themed photoshoot was quite a tough battle; just getting the outfit together took a lot of effort. The red and white plush vest and shorts created a striking color contrast with the traditional lion dance props. Once dressed and wearing the wig, we headed straight into the garden. The sunlight that day was actually quite strong, and some photos were even overexposed, but unexpectedly, this created a uniquely translucent texture.

The first location was on a stone bridge. Since it was a New Year cosplay theme, I specifically brought a lion dance head prop that was almost bigger than me, along with a "Gong Xi Fa Cai" scroll. To look more lively, I tried many high kicks and single-leg hops. The photo where I lift the lion head was actually a candid shot in backlit conditions; the photographer had to keep tilting the lens up to find angles, nearly breaking his back.

I'm especially satisfied with the hair bun styling for this look. To fit Hatsune Miku's character traits while matching this Chinese style outfit, we manually styled several voluminous hair buns embellished with small rhinestones that sparkled in the sun. The white base paired with the red vest brought the New Year festive atmosphere to 100%. However, when we moved to the rockery by the pond, the steps were extremely narrow, and I treaded carefully for fear of slipping and falling into the water with the lion head.

The pond scene actually took the most time. For example, the photo grid collage was a compilation of continuous movements. We needed to design various poses on the stone slabs—sitting, leaning, and adjusting hair. The shot leaning on the stone platform by the water looked effortless and cozy, but the platform was freezing cold, sending chill straight up my pant legs. Yet to maintain a relaxed feel, facial expressions had to stay steady.

As for post-processing, because the lighting contrast during shooting was quite stark, I handled the retouching myself. I mainly adjusted highlight and shadow tolerance to keep the velvet texture on the red parts of the costume crisp without letting noise corrupt the fur colors. Meanwhile, preserving the translucent green hair color alongside the red clothes kept the overall image from looking muddy.

I also put thought into the footwear for this look. The red-and-white platform sneakers nicely highlighted leg lines beneath the shorts. Although no long stockings or tights were worn, pairing them with short fluffy ankle socks didn't feel out of place in the winter atmosphere, adding a touch of playful charm.

Setting the shoot in a Chinese classical garden was entirely due to its built-in architectural structure. Vermilion pillars, grey brick stone steps, and carved wooden window lattices perfectly fit the traditional New Year vibe we wanted. In particular, hanging a long New Year couplet banner on the stone railing created a natural framing box. The fuzzy texture of the prop itself added rich layers to the visual composition.

In this kind of outdoor Cosplay photography, the biggest test is instant expression management. Dynamic movements pull on collar and cuff lines, requiring constant attention to ensure clothes don't shift too far out of place while eyes accurately capture the lens.

Since this year is the Year of the Horse, the blessing phrase "May you achieve immediate success" felt exceptionally fitting. By the time we finished this Hatsune Miku cosplay photoshoot, the sky was growing dark, missing the peak light hours, but luckily we gathered all essential scene materials. Post-processing also protected red and green colors locally, making the red bolder and the green more textured.

Writing down to this point wraps up the story behind this shoot. Every outdoor shoot feels like a battle, but seeing the vibrant colors and relaxed movements in the final images makes everything worthwhile. Consider this my special New Year gift to everyone.
