In preparing this Remilia Scarlet cosplay from Touhou Project, the styling underwent extensive refinement during pre-production. To channel her distinct persona—balanced between a noble young mistress and a vampire devil—I used an ultra-fair porcelain base makeup paired with a blue wavy curly wig, letting the bangs partially veil the eyes to cultivate an air of mystique. The red lace mob cap bonnet on top was quite tricky to wear, requiring careful pin placement to prevent it from slipping down during the shoot.
Speaking of the costume, it embraces a classic Gothic Lolita style. The upper half features voluminous white lace bell sleeves paired with a strappy black corset. Honestly, wearing the corset for hours cinched my waist tightly and made breathing slightly difficult, but to support the silhouette, I had to maintain an upright, poised sitting posture throughout. The tiered white skirt had multiple layers that bunched up when seated, so before Fuyujiro snapped the shutter, I had to repeatedly smooth out the hem to ensure the lace ruffles looked pristine on camera. The White stockings and cross-patterned boots were also selected for character fidelity; utilizing a low-angle wide-angle composition elongated leg lines remarkably on screen.
The demonic bat wings on my back were mounted to a custom harness frame; while not overly heavy, their broad span easily bumped into props when turning in the compact indoor set. The red scythe held in my left hand carried noticeable weight; being so long, I had to pay close attention to arm posture—projecting an effortless grip while preventing muscle fatigue and trembling from blurring the blade. The glowing orb was a special effect prop prepared for this shoot, housing a strong light source that illuminated my palms and the front of my dress.
Collaborating on the Anime-style photography was exceptionally smooth. Fuyujiro offered valuable lighting advice, using the localized light from the red orb to create warm-and-cool, chiaroscuro contrast against the dark background, accompanied by atmospheric haze for a haunting mystery. The studio featured arched windows, and shooting from a low angle not only flattered body proportions but also conveyed an all-commanding, dominating presence. We repeatedly adjusted the scythe's angle and orb's position, discarding dozens of shots to select these two balanced compositions. As a cosplayer, bringing this Touhou Project character to life and capturing that dark fantasy atmosphere through the lens was immensely rewarding. Having always loved dark aesthetics, this shoot provided great insights into managing rigid props and lighting control. I look forward to participating in more exquisite productions like this in the future.
