This time, collaborating with Wulin on this Demon Slayer academy style custom design cosplay night view photoshoot, we specifically chose to shoot at night. Although lacking the natural light of daytime, the building steps at night, against the streetlights and fill equipment, conversely present a quiet and deep texture, beautifully matching the time-stopping atmosphere we wanted to capture.
Regarding the outfits, we selected double-breasted black blazers with metal buttons, paired with white shirts and iconic dark red oversized bow ties. The school badges on the jackets and the finely striped pleated skirts make the overall academy vibe exceptionally dense. To get closer to everyday campus life, we did not carry excessive weapons or props from the original work, but instead chose a shoulder bag and white books as accents, making the overall posture of the figures appear more natural and relaxed for this academy style cosplay look.
In terms of hair and makeup, the base makeup was done with a cool white effect, paired with purple contact lenses to strengthen the gaze. For the character of Kanao, the straight blunt bangs and side-ponytail hairstyle were retained, using a pink-and-green butterfly hair ornament as a highlight to make the facial contours look softer and more introverted. Meanwhile, in Shinobu's styling, the purple gradient on the inner layers of the wig and another butterfly hair ornament in a different color scheme create a wonderful visual echo in color and temperament when the two stand together.
The temperature on the shooting day was not too chilly, but standing outdoors consecutively in long-sleeved jackets for over two hours was indeed a considerable test of physical strength. We started shooting after 8:00 PM and went until past 10:00 PM, needing to repeatedly adjust standing positions, angles, and expressions in between. Sometimes, we would finally get a pose set up only for a gust of wind to blow past and mess up the bangs, meaning we had to start all over again. Although the process was indeed a bit exhausting as we said, the small talks and cracking up while sitting on the steps waiting for the photographers to set up the lights became very authentic and fun interludes of this shoot.
The two photographers, Muzi and Wuyudu, were highly professional in controlling the night light and shadow for this night view cosplay project. They utilized the surrounding ambient light while using precise aperture and focal length control to beautifully blur the pillars and steps in the background. Especially when shooting those front-and-back staggered photos, they guided us to use the depth of field and eye interactions, perfectly recording that feeling of accompanying one another.
Actually, compared to the battle attire that fully adheres to the original scenes, this academy style custom design gave us much more room for interpretation. There was no need to deliberately express serious or heavy expressions; just casually holding books while standing on the steps, flashing a peace sign at the lens, or hopping on one leg for a playful freeze-frame all felt perfectly natural. This return to an everyday custom theme conversely gets closer to the delicate and quiet nature inside the characters' hearts. As cosers, being able to complete a narrative photoset like this with a partner in the night wind is highly memorable, and the quality of the finished photos definitely lived up to our two hours of persistence.
