Shooting Daki's styling from Demon Slayer this time required a considerable amount of preparation. For the foundation, traditional shironuri white face paint was chosen, with defined contouring applied beneath the cheekbones to carve out sculpted facial contours. The eye makeup was the visual focal point: an expansive wash of orange-red eyeshadow was layered and blended, paired with golden contact lenses, sharp elongated upward wings on the eyeliner, and slender brows to project a fierce yet seductive look. The lip color favored a deep, rich crimson, paired with slightly pursed lips to channel the character's signature haughty arrogance.
The hair was styled into an elaborate, towering updo supported by hair padding at the crown, with subtle mesh netting and wispy strands integrated to add dimensional depth. The headdress was laden with numerous ornate accessories; while the golden hair combs and long ornamental kanzashi pins looked stunning, they carried substantial weight in practice. Securing them required immense effort to ensure they wouldn't slip during turns or dynamic posing. Leaving loose face-framing strands along both sides softened the facial silhouette and kept the updo from feeling overly rigid.
In terms of wardrobe, this kimono features an intensely vivid color contrast. The outer layer is an off-white, wide-sleeved robe emblazoned with striking black tortoiseshell (kikkō) geometric patterns, woven from a fabric that carries an inherent sheen and subtle jacquard texture that catches studio light gorgeously. The vibrant red and magenta lining peeking through the collar and cuffs created a stark visual pop against the black-and-white exterior. The garment felt quite heavy when worn, and the voluminous draping sleeves, while delivering dramatic silhouettes, restricted arm movements. Therefore, I leveraged the wide sleeves to half-conceal my face or utilized glancing back over the shoulder and slow arm raises to capture diverse angles, highlighting the fabric's rich textures and patterns.
The nightscape was another major highlight of this shoot. Utilizing distant city lights as a blurred backdrop created soft bokeh orbs; paired with key lights illuminating the subject, this effectively lifted the figure out of the dark surroundings. Light falling across the white robe and intricate headpieces produced beautiful specular glints, accentuating the woven jacquard details. To ensure balanced facial illumination while preserving subtle shadow depth, extensive lighting adjustments were made on set.
The entire shoot was a demanding test of physical stamina and patience, as both the makeup and elaborate hairstyle had to remain immaculate for hours with restrained movements. When posing, I tried to internalize the character's psychological state, keeping my gaze sharp and piercing. The physical restrictions of the kimono pushed me to explore more expressive, nuanced body language. This photo set serves as a milestone record for this creative project; from initial styling prep to on-set lighting synergy, every effort went into faithfully recreating the overarching atmosphere of the character.
