Shooting Genshin Impact's Sandrone and Columbina with my cosplay partner took a ton of thought and preparation. We specifically picked an outdoor location with European stone pillars and archways, aiming for seamless harmony with the characters' Western fantasy aesthetic. The sunlight was blazing that day, beating straight down on the off-white stone steps; the crisp, sharp shadows actually lent the composition a dramatic stage-like ambiance.

Let's start with my Sandrone. The outfit is rich in layers: a white corset paired with black sleeves on top, accented by metallic ornaments and ruby embellishments at the neckline that gleamed brilliantly under the sun. The lower half features a skirt gradient from deep crimson to black, trimmed with a white ruffled hem to add a sense of fluid motion. I paired it with full-length White stockings and chunky black platform heels adorned with red ribbons. The heels were pretty tall, requiring me to constantly balance on the stone steps, but the resulting proportions looked fantastic on camera. Because the outfit leans heavily into black, I accentuated the depth of my eye makeup and wore blue contact lenses, creating a vivid color contrast against the white hair in the sunlight. During a break mid-shoot, I kicked off one shoe and left it aside, resting my foot clad in White stockings directly on the ground—that effortless, relaxed, and slightly languid moment was captured instantly by the lens.

My partner's Columbina had an entirely different aesthetic. Her main palette was blue and white, with cascading translucent white tulle interwoven with deep navy fabric, creating the fluid texture of rippling water as she moved. The white winged hairpiece was exceptionally delicate, making a striking visual statement against her long black hair and red highlights. To match the character's demeanor, she wore red contact lenses and soft pinkish eyeshadow, evoking an aura both mysterious and aloof. In her hand, she held an oversized white folding fan as a prop, which, together with her accessories, immediately amplified her enigmatic presence. We spent a lot of time testing how to spread her train to best display the garment's rich layering.

The entire shoot was quite exhausting—moving around under the scorching sun while constantly adjusting skirt hems and wig angles. Given the Western classical architecture, we experimented with angles across steps and beside columns. While resting on the steps and helping each other fix our outfits, the photographer caught several candid snapshots. In one shot, we sat side by side on the steps: with one shoe off and her folding fan resting on her lap, we looked down whispering to each other—that candid, natural interaction carried far more atmosphere than any stiffly staged pose. Another candid captured us holding hands as we walked up the steps, where the blue-and-white gown and red-and-black skirt flowed together; squinting slightly in the bright sun added a vibrant touch of life. A few crimson flower petals were scattered across the steps, enriching the lighting with extra details. Another shot of us sitting on the steps—me leaning against a pillar while she gazed toward the ground—was filled with cinematic storytelling.

Every time we shoot outdoors, the greatest joy comes from slipping into these meticulously curated costumes and bringing characters to life alongside a trusted partner. Despite the limited venue and harsh glare, seeing all the elements fall into place through the viewfinder to create that perfect 2D aesthetic made all the exhaustion melt away. Going through the photos and seeing every detail made all the hard work feel completely worthwhile, and I hope our deep love for these characters shines through every image.
