The convention photo set for Zhen Hai from Azur Lane is finally here. I have wanted to try this character for a long time, and during the prep stage, I put a lot of effort into studying the fabric textures and details. The outfit features a classic black and gold palette with very distinctive design accents. The sequin embellishments on the chest catch the light with subtle, delicate shimmer, while the golden tassels and frog closures at the collar serve as visual anchors. In choosing the textiles and accessories, I compared options extensively to ensure the ensemble felt substantial on camera without losing its sense of airy grace.
For props, to suit Zhen Hai's dignified aura, I prepared a black folding fan with gold-patterned ribs. Holding it while wearing long black opera gloves unified the dark color scheme. The gloves extend past the elbow with delicate black lace trim, which added noticeable depth during close-ups. For the lower half, I paired sheer Black stockings with patent leather stiletto heels, where the high slit of the skirt naturally revealed the leg lines. The glossy sheen of the patent heels contrasted beautifully with the matte finish of the hosiery—a detail that shines in the second cropped close-up. I opted to recline on a white plush rug; the convention floor was cold and bare, so the rug provided both a clean visual break and a striking chromatic contrast against the all-black outfit, keeping the entire frame clean and cohesive.
The lighting inside the convention hall was quite complex, blending natural light from the overhead glass curtain wall with a background of bare concrete floors and large E1-E2 directional signage. To soften background distractions, the photographer used a wide aperture to throw the hall out of focus, centering attention firmly on the subject and the rug. I shifted postures multiple times: reclining on my side required careful weight distribution to prevent excessive wrinkles from ruining the garment's lines, while keeping the fan steady to form a flattering angle with my arm. Raising one leg also injected dynamic tension into the frame, cleanly showcasing the heels and leg contours.
For the wig, I selected a glossy straight black style with blunt bangs, pinned on either side with black floral ornaments and white satin ribbons to align with the aesthetic. The makeup emphasized deep, defined eyes to match the dark, elegant tone. Wearing gloves and stockings for extended hours did get warm, and moving around required caution to avoid snags, but seeing the play of light and fabric fidelity in the final selects made every minute worthwhile. Bringing a favorite character to life and capturing every nuanced detail through the lens is always a rewarding journey. It serves as both a tribute to the character and a fulfilling exercise in camera poise. The shoot went smoothly, with heartfelt thanks to the photographer's sharp eye and the venue's available light. I look forward to presenting even better work in the next project.
