Shooting this ancient style cosplay of Zhen Hai from Azur Lane required a lot of preparation right from the start. To fully bring out the character's refined elegance and Eastern aesthetic, we devoted considerable effort to restoring the costume details and matching the scene's ambiance.
This costume has an immense amount of detail. The upper body uses white as its primary base, and my favorite part is the semi-sheer black mesh patchwork across the chest, which offers breathability along with a subtle, veiled allure. The geometric gold-and-black emblem at the neck serves as the finishing touch. The off-the-shoulder sleeves paired with long black gloves accentuate the slender arm lines. Meanwhile, the skirt design on the lower half is grandiose—the deep blue fabric bordered by delicate light gold trim resembles fluttering petals. When spread across the wooden floor amid swirling mist, it stretches out with breathtaking grace.
To highlight the character's blend of lazy yet exquisite charm, I put extra thought into the leg styling. The black stockings visually heighten the mystery, and the deliberately styled layered wrinkles around the ankles—forming black sheer slouch socks—paired with the faint textures along the thighs, enhance the depth of the overall look, guiding the viewer's eye naturally. In anime cosplay photography, such slouch sock styling softens the formality of rigid costumes, imparting a more casual and relaxed, at-home feel.
For the set design, we chose a traditional ancient-style courtyard environment. The wooden terrace and grey stone steps framed the composition. Props were intentionally arranged to create a lived-in feel—woven bamboo baskets filled with plump red and green grapes, alongside scattered pink bouquets on the table, crafting an intimate resting nook in the courtyard depths. White plush bunnies and a cute round yellow plushie rested on the floor, their soft textures breaking the night's stillness with playful vibrancy. Combined with the white paper oil-paper umbrella and a warm lamp with a bamboo base beneath it, the scene radiated a gentle warmth amidst the chilly evening breeze.
The lighting and atmospheric mood were among the most satisfying aspects of this shoot. We utilized deep, cool blue ambient lighting to evoke a nocturnal stillness, perfectly matching Zhen Hai's signature cool and poised aura. Additionally, we used dry ice mist during the shoot. As white smoke drifted across the wooden platform and swirled around the skirt, the scene took on an ethereal, celestial quality, seamlessly blending character and setting. In close-up compositions focusing on the legs and skirt, the mist paired with the navy fabric created a dynamic sense of flowing elegance.
Angle- and pose-wise, we steered clear of overly stiff standing poses, opting instead for high-angle overhead shots closer to the floor and relaxed sitting/reclining postures. This allowed the blue-and-gold contours of the skirt to fan out fully, while showcasing Zhen Hai's storytelling gaze and effortless poise on camera. When framing leg lines, wide-angle overhead perspectives created visual tension, establishing a stark contrast between the white top and dark blue-black skirt, enhanced by foreground-blurred floral clusters for cinematic depth.
Overall, kicking off my first project of 2026 with Zhen Hai from Azur Lane was a deeply rewarding endeavor. In every cosplay creation, immersing myself in the cultural nuances behind each character and bringing those aesthetics to life through photography is an intensely fulfilling and enjoyable process. I hope this styling and atmosphere convey a sense of tranquil yet powerful beauty to everyone who sees it.
