This Robin cosplay shoot took less than two weeks from preparation to final photos. To restore that fragile and sacred feeling of a sprite in a cage, I did a lot of homework on clothing and props in the early stage. The pattern of this outfit is actually very sophisticated; the splicing of the light pink-purple part of the top and the dark blue-purple sheer tulle requires very delicate sewing, otherwise the puff skirt's arc will look very collapsed. I added support to the puff sleeves and sleeve covers at the shoulders to make the contour more three-dimensional. The most exhausting part was the long-handled staff; the intertwined gold and purple decorations at the top were custom-molded separately, and the overall weight is not light. During shooting, the right hand had to maintain a gripping posture all the time, which really tested arm strength. The white wings behind and the halo on top of the head also had their fixed positions repeatedly adjusted to ensure they wouldn't give away the illusion during shooting.
In terms of makeup and styling, the light purple-blue gradient layers of the wig were trimmed for a long time, the styling of the bangs and sideburns needed to be adjusted according to the face shape, and the curl of the hair ends needed to look natural. The overall eye makeup leans towards yellow-green tones, matching highlights to make the eyes look more vivid under strong light. Thanks to makeup artist Teacher @Dongyeyeye, the makeup's longevity was very high, and it didn't darken much after shooting all afternoon under the strong studio lights.
The shooting location was chosen at @Zhiqing Photography Studio. The retro furnishings in the studio matched this theme very well. The giant golden birdcage was the core element of this shoot. To capture that gorgeous yet slightly fateful frame, we tried different cage door opening and closing angles. The dark red velvet curtains, classical sofa, retro grandfather clock, and easel in the background, paired with red floral arrangements and candlesticks, made the entire space very full. In terms of lighting, back-side lighting was mainly used as the main light, supplemented by warm yellow ambient light, which could not only outline the character's contour but also give the star patterns and gold trim on the skirt a reflective texture. In terms of post-processing, photographer @KKDawang's work this time really surprised me. He added very natural flickering particles and halo special effects to the frame, especially the glowing atmosphere around the staff and the character, without that rigid texture mapping feeling. The particle layers are rich, and the overall ambient feel is maxed out.
Although the shooting process was a bit hard due to the staff's weight and the large volume of the skirt, seeing the effect of the light and shadow perfectly blending with props in the final photos made everything feel totally worth it. This time, I didn't deliberately pursue high-saturation colors, but instead hoped to highlight Robin's ethereal and gorgeous temperament through lighting and character performance in a retro dark-toned environment.
