This Zhongli cosplay project has actually been lingering in my mind for a very long time. Back when I first started playing Genshin Impact, his character banner was active, and I was completely captivated by his lore and persona. The bittersweet irony is that, as a day-one veteran player, my account still doesn't have this gentleman—every single gacha pull ended in a heartbreaking 50/50 loss! So this time, I decided to suit up and step into the shoes of Rex Lapis myself, which felt like fulfilling that dream in an alternative way.

To do justice to this character, a tremendous amount of care went into pre-production. The wig features subtle orange-gradient highlights; I deliberately textured it into structured layers that balance relaxed composure with sharp presence, while firmly anchoring the ahoge on top to keep it from collapsing during convention walks. For makeup, aligning with his solemn aura meant focusing heavily on the eyes. I chose yellow-green colored contacts paired with elongated eyeliner and subtle lower lashline shading, striving to embody that calm, commanding authority that inspires awe without anger. The foundation was kept clean and porcelain-toned, with deepened nose contouring to accentuate his chiseled, aloof features.

The costume and props were the undisputed centerpieces of this build. The coat is tailored from dark brown jacquard textile with subtle sheen, lending a substantial, regal weight while allowing the wide coat tails and sleeves to billow gracefully with every step. The golden leaf prints and lapel trims were cross-referenced meticulously against official references. The golden-orange inner layer and deep reddish-brown pleated trousers were custom-tailored with fluid drape. For the belt's golden ornaments and yellow tassel charms, I specifically selected solid metal/tactile elements to enhance dimensionality. The polearm prop itself carries noticeable heft; to wield it one-handed without stiffness during shooting, I practiced stances extensively in private, studying natural grips and locking sharp eye focus along the spearhead.

The shoot took place right at the convention, where heavy crowds made finding angles and dodging bystanders a real challenge. To keep the subject front and center, we utilized dimmer ambient lighting complemented by dedicated facial fill lights. For the first shot, post-production spark and ember VFX were added to channel the magical intensity of a mid-combat strike. The remaining shots preserve the authentic convention atmosphere, relying on sharp gazes, polearm stances, and crossed-arm poses to command presence. Embodying a masculine formal silhouette, I consciously squared my shoulders and lowered my center of gravity to look broader and more grounded. Even if I haven't pulled Zhongli in-game, executing this shoot let me fully experience the daily life of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor consultant. Polishing every nuance took effort, but seeing the final photos made every second worthwhile.
