Not looking directly into the camera during selfies is an old habit of mine. Often, I feel intensely focused on myself on the phone screen, but the moment the shutter clicks, my eyes drift subconsciously with my peripheral vision. Friends have asked if it's strabismus or simply visual discrepancy from nearsightedness; I think it might be a bit of both, especially after putting on Blue colored contacts, which create a subtle shift between my focal point and the actual shooting angle. Yet, this unintended out-of-focus look sometimes feels far more natural than staring deliberately at the lens—a happy accident in its own right.

This look features Peipei cosplay from Arknights. The headpiece gear is quite substantial, offering a strong sense of completeness—from the delicate gold piping along the edge of the black hood to the oversized decorative white flower on the right side. The golden bead strand across the forehead, paired with the central forehead accessory featuring sculpted petals and three dangling metallic pillars, showcases solid craftsmanship. Securing this forehead jewelry requires precision: too tight and it pinches the forehead, too loose and it tilts easily. The wig was specially chosen in a dusty grayish-purple matching the original design; its strands are soft and smooth, and the blunt bangs frame the face nicely. For makeup, to complement the character's demeanor, I avoided heavy eye makeup and focused on the Blue colored contacts—that clear azure hue paired with soft pink blush makes the complexion appear translucent.

Taking a Cosplay selfie inside a cramped, lighting-variable car environment truly tests the camera. Diffused light filtering through the windshield mixed with overhead car cabin lights creates a blend of color temperatures. However, the gold lining of this garment displays a rich metallic luster under natural light, preventing the black coat from looking dull. The black pointed-collar shirt paired with a slender black ribbon and white textured inner lining maintains distinct layering even when the jacket is open.

In fact, breaking down cosplay often comes down to stacking one detail upon another. From fabric selection and accessory reshaping to makeup fine-tuning, every step attempts to get infinitely closer to that fictional character. Compared to rigorous studio shoots, taking a Cosplay selfie feels more like documenting my personal state during the process of merging with the character. While props and styling were on point, coordinating my gaze with the camera remains a persistent challenge that might require focused practice. Yet, this slightly bewildered, dreamy expression might just fit the character's sentiment in this specific setting of Roleplay.

While riding, I pulled out my phone to record the completeness of this look. In an unevenly lit vehicle interior, front-facing phone cameras often automatically compensate for highlights, blowing out the background and making eye focus even harder to control—often catching reflections on the glass or moving objects outside. If a photographer captured this with a DSLR, it might have frozen that instant more accurately. But since this is a personal daily record, I didn't want to break the spontaneous ease of the moment just to force eye contact.

After wrapping up this set and taking off the gear, my neck and shoulders definitely felt the strain, especially under the weight of that large floral piece and heavy hood, which required finding specific angles to balance during selfies. Screw clasps on the garments and wig styling were double-checked before heading out; this meticulous preparation is also part of the cosplay journey. Although perspective distortion from the front camera slightly alters face shape, proper light and angles still showcased the overall visual features. Even if my eyes weren't looking straight into the lens, all the iconic character elements were in place, making this shoot thoroughly worthwhile. This contrast—an elaborate, gorgeous character styling on the outside while trying my best to focus on the inside—is genuine, authentic, and truly worth documenting.
