The retouching for this Surtr photoshoot is finally complete! Let's dive straight into my overall impressions of portraying this character. When cosplaying Surtr, the absolute core essence is her imposing aura. She is an exceptionally complex character in Arknights: outwardly icy and unyielding, wielding a colossal greatsword, yet her lore note as 'the one who never forgets her grandmother' layers her persona with profound emotional weight. Therefore, in bringing her to life, I focused intently on capturing that subtle nuance—an aloof facade concealing an unshakeable obsession.
For the wig, I selected a highly saturated, vibrant red. To sculpt a voluminous yet slightly unkempt texture resembling roaring flames, I worked through generous amounts of styling wax and freeze spray. The cosmetic contact lenses were an ultra-pigmented violet hue paired with sharp anime-style eye contouring to elongate the eye shape; the lower lashes were hand-drawn individually with a liquid eyeliner pen to maximize the piercing intensity of the gaze. The black horns adorning my head were custom-cast in lightweight resin with a matte metallic finish, fastened securely with a hidden network of bobby pins and the wig cap to ensure they wouldn't shift with dynamic movement.
The black PU-leather choker and strappy techwear vest fitted like a second skin. The metallic buckles and zipper hardware offered wonderful tactile texture, though they were quite snug; to manage breathing and posture throughout the shoot, I had to continuously readjust the strap placements. Because the ensemble is relatively revealing, accentuating the lines of the neck, collarbones, and shoulders was paramount. Tucking the chin slightly and glancing downward into the lens easily channeled that haughty, overwhelming sense of pressure.
The set dressing featured ambient red mood lights and industrial steel scaffolding, harmonizing with Surtr's blazing elemental flame effects and Sarkaz heritage. High-contrast red and black schemes heavily test camera dynamic range and lighting control; while intense rim backlighting looks breathtaking, it easily blows out the fine edges of red wig strands. Ultimately, we adopted a balanced setup pairing a soft key light with a red rear rim-light, preserving sharp facial definition while giving the red hair a fiery, translucent glow.
Surtr is fundamentally a solitary figure, so on set, I intentionally kept smiling to an absolute minimum, maintaining an indifferent aloofness while keeping a story behind my eyes. Conveying that dramatic tension through physical poise is far more challenging than striking conventional pretty poses. Embodying such an intense character demands stamina and razor-sharp concentration, but seeing the final selects made every hardship deeply worthwhile. This entire creative journey was a process of rediscovering and understanding the character anew.
