The Elysia bride cosplay event photos shot this time at the Hangzhou Dreamland Anime convention turned out even better than expected. Shooting the bridal series is always physical work; this outfit has numerous layers, and just putting it on and organizing it took a lot of time. The pink and white mixed wig was styled with twin tails and light curls, and the star and moon crown on top of the head fits the bridal theme very well. In terms of makeup, polarized eyeshadow was deliberately used around the eyes, coupled with sequins and teardrop-shaped stickers, striving to restore the character's dreamy yet somewhat divine feeling.
The venue space of this convention was very large, and the gray industrial-style architecture was actually a challenge for shooting because the background is relatively cold and rigid. To highlight the character's softness, the photographer put a lot of effort into lighting. The shooting environment of the convention photos was quite complex, filled with passersby and photography equipment everywhere. We found a relatively empty corner in the venue and utilized a large-aperture lens to blur the background. Those fluttering pink petals in the photos were actually manually thrown on-site, and it took several tries to capture the moment when they landed perfectly. The material of the veil is very light and thin; to capture the effect of it fluttering in the wind, an assistant helped fan it from the side to present that ethereal sense of layering.
The skirt hems made of multi-layered fabrics stacked together are extremely heavy, requiring one to hold them with hands while walking all the time. The pairing of the white long gloves on the arms and the bouquet added a bit of elegance to the entire frame. The bouquet used pink roses and white filler greens, tied with a translucent ribbon. Speaking of shooting experience, in such a large venue, what I value most is the control of gaze and posture. The posture of holding the skirt, the angle of looking at the lens, and even the slight upward tilt of the chin will all affect the temperament of the final photos. The skirt of this bridal outfit is extremely huge, and when posing, it is necessary to ensure the complete outline of the skirt without looking bloated, so the standing posture was constantly adjusted.
Some small episodes were also encountered during the shooting, such as the wig needing constant tidying and petals falling on the mesh of the skirt needing timely cleanup. But the moment I saw the original photos, I felt everything was totally worth it. Elysia's bridal style is extremely eye-catching at the convention, and the details of this styling are numerous; whether it's the lace roses on the dress or the lace trim of the gloves, they were all well-presented under the lens. Event photos record not just a character, but also the invested state at the convention back then. The lighting and atmosphere of this shoot were both spot on, presenting a unique texture.
Before launching this styling, I tried it on at home in advance and adjusted the position of the back straps to ensure quick wearing on the day of the convention. The care of the wig also needed to be fixed in advance with hairspray on the bangs to prevent them from collapsing while walking around the exhibition. The styling of this hand bouquet also referred to some floral design, choosing orange-pink roses to echo the flowers on the dress. Because of walking around in the venue, the choice of shoes was also crucial; to avoid destroying the overall proportion, thick-soled white shoes were worn, which are completely invisible under the cover of the long skirt. The shooting time at the convention was very tight, usually requiring the capture of multiple poses within an hour. When shooting this set of photos, we mainly utilized dynamic snapshots, such as the moment of lifting the veil or throwing petals, which is much more natural than posed shots and better reflects the lightness of the skirt in motion. In fact, convention photos best test a coser's impromptu performance; one must not only adapt to the noisy environment but also maintain the best state in front of the lens. A restored cosplay styling is inseparable from the tacit cooperation of costume, makeup, props, and photography. I am very satisfied with the final photos this time, and it also recorded the joyful time in Hangzhou Dreamland.
