When I first received this costume for Ellen Joe cosplay from Zenless Zone Zero, the concept of a rock bassist immediately popped into my head. Instead of a typical static pose shoot, I wanted to merge street night scenes to showcase a bolder, more uninhibited facet of the character. For styling, to preserve the distinct recognition of the Shark girl, the wig kept the short black hair with pink dipped tips at the ends, finished with her signature silver star-shaped hairpin. In terms of makeup, crimson contact lenses paired with deep reddish-brown eyeshadow and faux freckles beneath the eyes intensified the piercing sharpness of the gaze. For the outfit, I selected a black sleeveless zip-up vest with the red serrated-textured shoulder straps serving as the visual focal point, paired with a red-and-black striped arm warmer on the right arm and black leather armbands on both arms. The lower body featured a black pleated skirt accented with white linear trim, complemented by a black belt with metallic buckles, black leather thigh garters, over-the-knee socks, and black tall boots, highlighting this Stockings cosplay.
The shoot was staged in front of street vending machines at night. The cool blue streetlights intertwined with the stark white glow from inside the vending machines, inherently creating a cyberpunk and gritty urban street vibe that was tailor-made for our Rock style theme. To amplify visual tension, I brought along a white electric bass. At first glance, the stark white body of the bass formed a striking contrast against the black wardrobe. Posing with it wasn't light work—holding the neck with one hand or maintaining a playing stance requires genuine core strength. For example, in the shots seated in front of the vending machines—right foot propped on the ledge, left leg naturally extended, bass held across my body—I had to engage my back muscles to brace my torso while keeping facial expressions relaxed. For low-angle standing shots, to make the bass look even more commanding, I shifted my weight onto the back leg and leaned the torso slightly forward.
In controlling body language, a Rock style theme demands casting aside sweet, demure postures. The gaze must be chillingly sharp, the jawline taut. One pose where a hand is raised casually to the forehead might look effortless, but the head, shoulders, and arm formed a stable triangular composition that accentuated the waistline and leg proportions. Thanks to the combination of black over-the-knee socks and thigh garters in this Stockings cosplay, the contours of thigh muscles under the shifting light created a unique visual focal point while striding and walking, which is precisely the subtle detail that brings out the character's sensual allure.
To imbue the photos with deeper atmosphere, we experimented with varied lighting angles during shooting. Facing the vending machine lights, crisp highlights sculpted facial contours, while backlit angles cast deep, dramatic silhouettes. Street elements like Japanese signage, parking signs, and convex traffic mirrors served as fitting background accents; we didn't overly clean up the backdrop, preserving that slightly raw, gritty street texture. The shoot lasted late into the night, and repeatedly adjusting poses with a heavy bass in the freezing wind was truly exhausting. Yet seeing that aggressive, frontwoman rock energy permanently captured before the lens made every bit of hardship worthwhile. Rock doesn't demand textbook perfection—only raw, authentic release.
