The convention photos from this Chengdu CD30 have finally been organized, and I'd love to share the shooting record and on-site experience of this Elysia cosplay directly with everyone.
The layering of this outfit is extremely rich, featuring a waist cincher paired with a dark skirt. To support the curve of the skirt hem, a small petticoat was matched inside; although there is a slight sense of restriction when walking, the overall silhouette looks stunning in front of the lens. The top is an off-the-shoulder design, coupled with black straps and golden accessories. To maintain the best condition during the shoot, the straps needed to be tightened a bit when wearing, which better accentuates the waistline. The arm sleeves are printed with fine patterns; the material is actually a bit stuffy, but in an environment like a convention, for the sake of styling integrity, I basically wore them the entire time.
Wigs and makeup are the soul of 2D characters. The pink blunt-bangs wig was re-trimmed and styled before going out, and the sideburns on both sides were appropriately thinned to modify the face shape. The black cat ears and white lace hair accessories on top of the head were fixed to the wig net base with hairpins, and the angles were adjusted several times to ensure they wouldn't reveal seams when lowering or raising the head. For the eye makeup, blue contact lenses were purposely used, and reddish eyeshadow was used for large-area smudging at the outer corners of the eyes, matched with a specific eyeliner technique to make the eyes look more vibrant. Pinkish blush was applied to both sides of the cheeks, keeping the overall makeup look clear and translucent.
To match this styling, white lace long stockings and black patent leather Mary Jane high heels were chosen. High heels do lengthen the leg proportions and are very photogenic in full-body photos, but the convention venue is huge, and walking and queuing inside wearing them is a major physical exertion. During the shoot, the photographer guided some poses, such as the gesture of lifting the skirt hem with both hands in Figure 1, which can well showcase the overall tailoring of the skirt while also capturing the leg lines. The texture of the white stockings under the convention lighting is great; when lifting the skirt, attention should be paid to arm strength, trying to keep the movements natural and relaxed to avoid looking stiff.
When shooting half-body photos, the photographer used a large aperture lens to blur the venue background behind, filtering out some messy elements. When making reaching or hands-on-hips movements, pay attention to sinking the shoulders and slightly puffing out the chest and pulling in the abdomen, so the body shape in the photos will look even better. The on-site lighting is relatively complex with lots of top lighting, so it was necessary to constantly communicate with the photographer to adjust positions and find an angle where the face receives even lighting.
At the convention site, I met many enthusiastic gamers and photographers, exchanging pictures and chatting with each other. Although it was extremely exhausting by the end of the day and my feet were very sore, seeing the photo results made me feel that all the details of the costume and efforts in makeup and styling were wonderfully presented. In the future, I will continue to work hard on costume accuracy and camera expressiveness, hoping to bring more complete cosplay works.
