From the moment I received this steampunk-style maid outfit for Identity V's (Identity V) Emma Woods (Emma Woods cosplay) to the final look, a lot of thought went into refining every detail. To seamlessly harmonize both steampunk and Gardener (Gardener cosplay) elements, extensive work went into the layering of the outfit. The outer layer is a black dress with a satin sheen, outlined along the edges with bright yellow piping, worn over a white high-collar blouse with a black, gold-trimmed necktie serving as the crowning touch. The broad vintage brown corset at the waist is undoubtedly the soul of the entire ensemble; its gilded lacing and detailed patterns not only amplify the intricate craft, but also beautifully flatter body proportions.
For hair and makeup, to faithfully recreate the character's traits, I wore high-pigment blue-gray contact lenses. The eye makeup used warm-toned shading, with pink heart accents and blush deliberately dabbed onto the cheeks, hoping to channel a playful yet subtly mechanical charm. The brown bob wig was trimmed with blunt straight bangs and paired with a white ruffled maid headpiece, instantly elevating the overall completion of the look.
The accessories this time were remarkably varied. Along with the classic red plastic pitchfork, I prepared a black feather duster and even repurposed some white portable photography gear as interactive props. Since we were shooting on the convention floor, the background was filled with amber neon strips and adjacent booths, creating complex ambient lighting. Fortunately, we brought a Godox light, which paired with a Fujifilm X-M5 and a 27mm f/1.2 lens to melt away the cluttered backdrop with a wide aperture while crisply illuminating the subject. Convention crowds were massive, so finding clean angles that avoided photobombers took real effort, not to mention constantly monitoring overhead spotlights to prevent awkward shadows on the face.
For the lower half, the black tutu skirt is lined with white ruffles that create dynamic layers in motion. To visually elongate the silhouette, I chose over-the-knee Striped stockings (Striped stockings) in black and brown vertical bands paired with black leather dress shoes; sitting on a high barstool showcased long, sleek leg contours. The vertical striping visually flatters leg shape, and the leather shoes add tangible texture.
During the shoot, I explored varied poses—flashing a peace sign, handing items toward the lens, or perching on the high stool to convey static relaxation. Shooting at a convention moves at a brisk pace, demanding quick adaptation to lock in the right angles and light to showcase the outfit at its best. From fine craftsmanship to overarching ambiance, this ensemble met every expectation and remains one of my absolute favorite shooting experiences.
