For this Star Guardian Akali photoshoot, the focus during pre-production was entirely on bringing out the texture and finish of the costume.
The suit features a bold purple-and-white color-blocking design, with the three-pointed star emblem on the chest crafted from holographic material that gleams vividly under the lights. To keep the suit form-fitting and wrinkle-free, we constantly adjusted the belt and skirt placement before shooting. The gloves were made of glossy patent material that offered zero breathability, leaving my hands soaked in sweat after just one sequence of poses. The dual scythe props posed another challenge; the joints connecting the handles and blades had to be exceptionally sturdy to withstand dynamic, large-scale action poses.
The wig was styled into a high ponytail with a blue-to-purple gradient, requiring generous amounts of hairspray to maintain that sharp, edgy texture. As for the makeup, we accentuated the eye contours using cool-toned eyeshadow paired with purple contact lenses to capture Akali's cold, piercing gaze.
Since Akali is an assassin, I avoided soft or passive standing poses in my choreographies. Kneeling postures and lunges were central to this set. When dropping to one knee, I had to keep my thigh muscles firmly engaged out of frame to maintain clean lines, all while keeping my upper body looking effortlessly composed. Every kick or slash of the scythe meant holding my breath the exact instant the shutter clicked. Action shots like readying stances or high kicks were especially tough on balance in high-heeled boots, requiring me to plant my weight discreetly into the floor to prevent slipping.
The set was dressed with painted backdrops of starlit skies and city skylines, accented with purple reeds and neon lighting. The studio lights were dialed up hard and contrasty to accentuate the suit's glossy sheen. When shooting in stockings, the over-the-knee pair tended to slide down during larger movements, so we had to pull them up and readjust frequently. The golden accents on the boots also risked getting scuffed during movement, making prop and wardrobe maintenance a constant task throughout the shoot.
Akali's persona is defined by bowing to no one, so I deliberately held back any smiles in front of the lens, keeping my jawline firm and glaring straight into the camera to channel that aloof, unyielding confidence. By the wrap, I was completely drained, but seeing the raw tension in the previews proved all the effort was worthwhile. Striving to embody the character's movement and spirit made this a test of both physical endurance and mental grit. From styling the wig to checking the key lights and nailing the final freeze-frame pose, every step relied on seamless team synergy. I personally love capturing combat-infused stillness, and I hope this photo set conveys the authentic edge of her character.
