For this Zenless Zone Zero Aria 'Discord' photoshoot, we spent two whole weeks prepping the industrial stage setting. From trimming the wig to perfecting every minute garment detail, I aimed to faithfully recreate that vibrant yet subtly rebellious idol aura. The trickiest element of the costume was the black patent leather, which easily threw off weird, harsh reflections under intense studio strobes. During the shoot, we leaned heavily into backlighting; the dynamic range of the Sony A7M5 was a true lifesaver, working with the 50mm F1.4 GM lens to transition stray hair strands and background neon glows with organic smoothness.
The location was an industrial, abandoned-factory styled studio, where weathered green crates and rusted oil drums stacked together to build an authentic gritty decay. Against this rugged backdrop, the crimson skirt and vivid pink hair struck a fierce chromatic clash. For makeup, I intensified the eyeshadow and lashes, while blue contact lenses brought sharp, electric focus to my gaze. The heart-shaped demon horn headpiece and tactical headphones were essential props—during takes, we used a compact fill light to catch the translucent, luminous texture of the hearts, injecting authentic sci-fi flavor into the moody environment.
In terms of pose design, I drew heavily from the stagecraft of live idols: perching atop wooden crates pretending to adjust the headset, or clutching the microphone with closed eyes in pure musical reverie—freezing dynamic, kinetic instants on camera. The platform soles and over-the-knee boots were actually quite heavy; perching on the narrow rims of oil drums to find angles tested my balance severely, though it elongated the muscle contours along my legs wonderfully. A special note on the patterned Stockings worn this time: because they featured delicate skull prints, ambient light could easily blur the pattern. The photographer knew exactly what to do, using side rim light to chisel out the stocking texture—especially where the thigh meets the tall boot, letting a sliver of skin clash against dark leather for striking visual impact.
Under her lore, the instant the spotlights blaze, she must radiate pure, unyielding energy—a state I fought to sustain before the lens throughout. Staring wide-eyed into blistering spotlights often left my eyes watering with strain, yet reviewing the previews instantly washed away fatigue with that electric stage tension. Being the debut roll of this set, we also experimented with cool-toned violet-blue ambient lighting to break free from conventional saccharine idol tropes, injecting a gritty cyberpunk edge. Every shutter press was a bet on a split second, and fortunately, the final frames landed with rock-solid presence. The color grading preserved the garments' rich, saturated hues, seamlessly fusing the raw grit of the industrial set with the refined polish of a 2D anime idol.
