Today's shoot featured the August von Parseval formal gown look from PhoPractice Issue 173. The texture of this outfit in reality is truly exceptional: the silver sequined halter top and miniskirt refracted fine, shimmering gleams under warm vintage lighting, with dynamic shifts in light and shadow as I moved. To balance the visual intensity of the sequins, I layered an expansive white plush stole; that fluffy volume beautifully framed and accentuated the grandeur of the evening dress beneath. For head styling, great care went into every detail: long straight purple hair with blunt bangs, crowned with mechanical black cat-ear headbands, black satin ribbons, and metallic accents. Makeup centered heavily on the eyes, deepening contours with purple eyeshadow and crisp eyeliner to channel that aloof, glamorous edge integral to the formal dress concept.
Styling the lower half was a pivotal highlight of the ensemble. Lace-trimmed white thigh-high stockings with garter straps, paired with silver sequined high heels, visually elongated the leg lines. To achieve the best framing, I explored several seated postures: whether crossing my legs or leaning forward slightly, I paid close attention to garment folds and lace orientation to ensure lines extended gracefully across the frame. Accessories were equally uncompromised—layered rhinestone necklaces, bracelets, armbands, and rings added rich textural intricacy under close-up shots. Holding a clear glass goblet or a lace folding fan with extended, poised movements effortlessly brought out that languid yet delicately distant atmosphere.
The set design for this shoot was crafted with immense dedication. Vintage European-style wooden tables, sofa chairs, a gramophone, and a piano radiated classical charm beneath warm amber illumination. Most delightfully, the scene was dotted with several round yellow cartoon plush toys, alongside a strawberry cake set atop the table—playful contrasts that kept the visual mood from becoming overly stern. During the shoot, we used these props as foreground and background accents, placing plushies near my feet or at the edges of the frame to enrich composition layers.
Photographer @大嘟王 shot this session using a Canon R5 Mark II paired with an RF 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. The 24-70mm focal range is remarkably versatile for indoor portraits, capturing atmospheric medium-length frames while fluidly transitioning to full-body compositions. Indoor ambient lighting relied mainly on warm amber desk lamps and soft natural diffusion; the wide aperture's shallow depth of field dissolved background oil paintings, floral displays, and wooden furnishings into creamy bokeh, cleanly highlighting the subject. During on-set communication, we experimented with varied lighting angles—especially the brilliant specular rim highlights on the silver sequins and the illuminated texture of the white plush stole, both of which rendered exquisitely on the camera monitor.
From refining hair and makeup to posing and prop interaction, the shooting rhythm remained wonderfully brisk throughout. Poses like holding the folding fan to half-veil the face or raising a wine glass toward the lens required repeated takes to discover the most natural state. This August von Parseval gown look preserved classical opulence while weaving in charming, playful elements through styling and set decor—bringing this entire ensemble to fruition through cosplay was an exceptionally joyful experience.
