On March 9, 2025, fully equipped with my costume and props, I arrived at the venue of the Huaqiao Otaku World OtakuWorld Anime and Game Expo. Compared to studio shoots, I prefer capturing convention photos in lively event environments, so this year I've been continuously exploring the lighting characteristics of different venues.
I spent a considerable amount of time preparing for this shoot. In particular, this long silver-white hair—which extends past my upper body—really tested the wig's hair volume and smoothness. To achieve a sleek texture on camera, I spent a long time carefully combing it the night before and weighed down the ends to prevent static electricity from knotting the hair as I walked around the venue. At the convention, hall overhead lights can be quite messy, and improper glare reflections on the wig can make it look frizzy. Therefore, I communicated with the photographer beforehand regarding the texture and directional edge lighting we wanted for the hair strands. Wearing this white dress was also a challenge; walking around an active event meant white fabric could easily get dirty. Plus, with so many lace and ruffle pleats at the hem, I didn't dare sit down carelessly throughout the shoot and had to carefully lay down a rug at the venue first.
In terms of styling details, the collar featured a New-Chinese style mandarin collar combined with a chest cutout design, keeping the pure white dress from looking dull. The sleeves were loose flutter sleeves trimmed with delicate mini lace. To match the monochrome white palette of the dress, I intentionally eschewed high heels for pure white short socks and white flat shoes, unifying the color tone while presenting a sweet, neat look.
During the shoot, I relied heavily on the photographer's coordination and guidance. The photographer used a wide aperture on location to blur the passing crowd and neighboring booths into beautiful background bokeh, making the subject stand out vividly. Especially when looking up toward the hall's array spotlights, hair strand edges caught a beautiful rim-light glow along the direction of light, which felt far more natural than harsh flash lighting in a studio.
The dark grey rabbit plush I held throughout served as the visual anchor for the entire look. Since white costumes reflect light easily, the frame can easily feel floaty without dark-toned props for contrast. The rabbit's eyes featured two cross-shaped sparkle accents, with a small white bow tied around its neck. During shooting, I experimented with different interactive poses as needed: holding it close, raising it overhead, and placing it right before the camera lens for a blurred foreground effect.
For visual composition, we explored several distinct focal arrangements. While seated, the white long dress spread out like clouds to showcase the shoe and sock styling, visually elongating leg lines. Standing while holding the rabbit, I slightly shifted my center of gravity to let the skirt fall smoothly, rendering a clean, fluid silhouette. For close-ups, I held two long strands of hair in hand, using subtle hand gestures to infuse dynamic emotional flow into static photography. Throughout the shoot, the photographer constantly verified light and shadow angles with me—such as utilizing light-dark boundary lines created by venue pillars and spotlights to outline my silhouette. Finding this collaborative chemistry made the entire process remarkably efficient and enjoyable.
During breaks, I overheard attendees exclaiming "my youth is back!" which deeply touched me. Cosplay is never just about putting on an outfit; the most vital aspect is expressing the character's inner temperament and emotion so people recognize those iconic traits instantly. Being able to produce a set of work in 2025 in an offline setting that satisfies both myself and fellow fans is a personal milestone. I hope to share more updates from these conventions, recording my摸索 (explored) experiences in anime cosplay and photography through images and words.
