Catching the afternoon during the Guangzhou Anime Convention parade season when the sun was bright, I finished this outdoor shoot on the sidewalk around the venue. The character chosen this time was Kasugano Sora. Originally, I wanted to capture a cool, quiet atmosphere with a touch of inner thoughts. Luckily, Guangzhou had great weather these past few days, and the brightly lit outdoor scenes unexpectedly fit this white healing style outfit perfectly.
First, let's talk about the hair and makeup preparation. This pale blonde long straight wig was the soul of the look. To maintain the natural curve of the straight bangs, I specially styled them before heading out. The white ribbon hair accessories clipped on both sides were the highlight of this subtle touch; they added a bit of character recognition to the otherwise plain outfit without ruining its purity. For contact lenses, I chose a pinkish-blue shade. For eye makeup, I intentionally softened the contours, using only light pink and soft violet subtle shimmers for blending. The lip color was a soft peach pink, aiming to create a translucent feel. Since it was shot in strong outdoor sunlight, the base makeup didn't deliberately pursue a completely matte finish like under indoor flash lights; instead, it retained a slight natural glow, which actually looked more translucent under intense sunlight.
The outfit was a pure white sleeveless ruffled dress with a ring of soft gathered frills around the neckline, a matching white bow tied right in the center, and large lace details on the skirt hem. A dress that is entirely white without any extra colors really tests the power of light shaping. Under direct front light around noon, the pure white cotton-polyester blend fabric glowed, giving the photos a high-key, airy, and breathing quality. However, precisely because it was so white, focus and exposure control during shooting had to be handled with extreme care—slightly overexposed and you lose the dress's details, while slightly underexposed makes it look dull. Fortunately, this outdoor location provided a lot of help.
This time, I chose to shoot near several segments of silver metal guardrails. These cold, hard metallic lines served as the best geometric accents, creating a strong contrast in texture against the soft, flowing white dress. The photo in Picture 4, which I chose as the cover, shows me standing sideways in front of the railing with my hands crossed behind my back, perfectly centered in the composition. Sunbeams fell diagonally from above, casting crisp shadows on my body and the ground, while the green trees behind were completely blurred into soft blocks of color by the wide-aperture lens, preserving the signature greenery of Guangzhou so the frame didn't look completely washed out in white.
During the shoot, my mindset actually overlapped a bit with the character. Outside the railing, people were bustling by—the noisy crowd of the anime convention—while I, separated by this metal fence, wanted to capture a touch of the solitude and serenity unique to Kasugano Sora's inner world. Thus, in terms of expressions, I avoided exaggerated smiles, merely lifting the corners of my lips slightly and gazing straight ahead, trying to stay calm and settled. The photographer guided me wonderfully; besides the standing shot, we also took angles squatting by the railing or sitting directly on the floor tiles, like in Picture 1 and Picture 3. That slightly curled-up posture actually expressed the character's sense of guardedness against the outside world even more. Meanwhile, the action in Picture 5, leaning sideways against the railing with one leg slightly lifted, was meant to step outside the box and give the image a sense of fluid emotion and lightness.
The color grading for the entire photo set leaned toward low saturation and high brightness, perfectly fitting the aesthetic of the original anime Yosuga no Sora. The white dress, pale blonde long hair, and natural green background formed a very comfortable color palette. Although shooting outdoors under the blazing sun all day was physically exhausting, seeing how well the light, shadow, and mood blended in the final shots made everything worth it. This anime convention cosplay experience gave me more ideas about outdoor photography—light, environment, fabric textures: every element actually helped me step deeper into the character. Every time I go to an anime convention, it's not just about standing there in costume, but hoping to find those brief moments where the character can breathe within these fragmented real-world scenes.
