Inside the venue of the Shanghai P&I Exhibition, the natural light filtering through the oversized floor-to-ceiling windows was exceptionally pleasant. The expansive shooting space offered generous diffused ambient light, providing beautifully even illumination across the subject. For this session, I brought the Sony a7m5 paired with two Viltrox lenses: the 35mm F1.2 LAB and the 85mm F2 EVO. The 35mm focal length was ideal for establishing the spatial relationship between the sprawling windows and the exhibition hall, while the 85mm excelled at capturing close-up expressions and mid-body emotive portraits. The weather was cooperative, with shooting parameters hovering around 1/500s, f/1.6, and ISO locked at 100, yielding raw files with remarkable dynamic range.
The concept for this shoot was Rem's white angel style photography look. Her short blue hair featured neat blunt bangs and white hairpins; to highlight the character's distinct features, I selected bright blue contact lenses and paired them with pink-toned eyeshadow and blush to soften the overall texture. The white halo floating overhead was anchored by a slender clear rod, complemented by white feathered wings on my back. The costume was a short white dress embellished with intricate lace, ruffles, and pleating, tied with a white bow at the neckline and finished with cold-shoulder lantern sleeves. The hemline was short yet rich in tiers, styled with white lace wristbands and frilled ankle socks to maintain a pure white aesthetic throughout.
To enrich interactive storytelling within the frame, I brought along a solid white square pillow. It proved to be a versatile prop: sitting or kneeling on the floor while clutching it shielded parts of the torso or provided an armrest to eliminate awkward posing tension. At other times, casually dangling it with one hand or kicking it lightly while balancing on one leg made the composition feel lively and spontaneous. When light cascaded from the side-rear of the floor-to-ceiling windows, the lace trim on the white dress revealed distinct layers, while highlights remained creamy and free of blowout thanks to the natural outdoor diffusion.
The venue's vaulted ceiling and exposed metal trusses served as the primary background architecture. To keep the framing distraction-free, I kept the aperture wide open for most setups. With the 85mm F2, ceiling spotlights and metallic lines melted into dreamy circular bokeh circles, throwing the subject's silhouette into razor-sharp focus. Meanwhile, the 35mm F1.2 LAB effortlessly showcased the graceful drape of the skirt and fluid leg lines in both standing and seated poses, with its razor-thin depth of field delivering striking three-dimensional pop.
The entire shoot flowed seamlessly. Posing was kept deliberately effortless rather than forced. In terms of eye contact, I alternated between gazing directly into the lens and closing my eyes as if resting against the pillow, harmonizing the blue hair with the white garments to foster a serene, pristine aura. Eyelash shadows and delicate cheek flushes were faithfully caught in the soft daylight, rendering extensive color grading practically unnecessary during post-sorting. Whether in studio photography or in exhibition halls with natural lighting, dialing in proper distance and exposure delivers a luminous transparency that pure indoor strobes rarely match.
As the light beyond the glass began to fade, the photoshoot reached its wrap, and it was time to head home to import the memory cards.
