Sorting through this set of Rei Ayanami cosplay Convention photos shot on Day 2 of the Changsha Menghua Anime Expo on June 1st. Regarding this character, the work is Neon Genesis Evangelion. Since the concept is a Bandage Angel bandage doll, the white wrapped fabric strips serve as the core element; during tailoring, numerous wrinkles and cutouts were deliberately crafted to showcase body lines, especially the negative space around the waist, which visually elongates body proportions effectively.
The biggest challenge this time was the wings on my back and the red lance in hand. The wings were massive with custom feathers; navigating through crowded convention halls required constant mindfulness of turning angles to avoid brushing against passersby. The shaft of the lance was quite long, standing out like a signpost among the crowd, but to faithfully recreate that sense of despair and purity from the series, bringing this weapon to the convention floor was essential.
The sunlight was glaring and the indoor venue lighting was complex that day, so photographer Aenlly and I mainly sought out dimmer, industrial backdrops, utilizing side-backlighting to outline the contours of the white bandages. Our synergy during shooting was seamless—such as when aiming the red lance toward the camera, I adjusted the gaze of my crimson eyes to maintain that ethereal, cool detachment, expressing the character's unique persona.
For this styling, I personally focused on the nuances of maintaining an expressionless demeanor. Since the character herself is an artificial human, even when encountering so many passionate fellow fans at the expo, I strived to preserve a calm, peaceful state to maintain the character's essence. The red lance was not heavy, just long, requiring caution when turning so as not to bump into others. Wearing the white wings all day left my shoulders slightly sore, but capturing that airborne flutter in static photography made it a wonderful memory.
