[Ruan Mei cosplay] Interpreting Chinese-Style Poetics in Honkai: Star Rail

This shoot featuring Ruan Mei cosplay was completed live at last weekend's convention. Photographer Yongxiao precisely captured the intricate details of this Chinese-style attire.

Many friends previously asked about the color scheme of this costume. It primarily uses a gradient mix of light cyan-teal and deep sandalwood blue, complemented by small accents of pure white and gold thread piping—visually capturing the subtle elegance characteristic of Chinese-style photography and aesthetics. To present three-dimensional layering, hollowed-out stitching was used across the chest and waist, with a dark inner lining cinching the waist. The white floating sleeves at the shoulders are a design I adore, effectively elongating neck and shoulder lines while visually echoing the high side slit at the hem, ensuring a graceful flow when turning or moving. The wig features teal highlights to align with the cool color palette, paired with matching long velvet gloves and dark green contact lenses.

The trickiest part during shooting actually lay in the props. The oil-paper umbrella itself is quite large, demanding arm strength when opened single-handedly. Finding a specific angle was necessary to keep the canopy level without tilting, while balancing body stability against the breeze blowing through the skirt and water sleeves. The Ruanqin (plucked string instrument) and round fan served as the second set of props on site. The Ruanqin prop features rich details in its restoration, including plum blossom ornaments on the neck and soundboard. In the seated photo, leg extension angles were adjusted to complement the posture with the Ruanqin and balance the frame. The round fan was used for close-up shots, where hand-painted flower-and-bird motifs on the fan surface rendered intricately under the camera, complemented by natural hand tension to avoid looking stiff.

Lighting at convention venues is notoriously difficult to capture; overhead industrial lamps easily leave massive glare patches on reflective floors. However, photographer Yongxiao cleverly used reflector boards to brighten my face, while preserving tiny dust particles floating in the air during post-processing, giving these Convention photos a unique live-event atmosphere. Pedestrians and booths blurred out in the background isolated the character from the crowded environment, highlighting the costume texture.

Regarding outfit maintenance, the fabric of this Anime cosplay costume is relatively lightweight and thin, particularly the ribbons, which were easy to step on when moving around. Therefore, we minimized large movements during filming, focusing on static and semi-static poses. Black pointed high heels were chosen to harmonize the look, elongating lower body proportions and making leg lines appear longer beneath the slitted skirt. Among the set, I'm especially satisfied with the compositions in the first three photos—particularly the standing angle holding the umbrella, which feels like a Chinese-style scroll quietly unfurling.

As final photos, every frame benefited from swift communication with the photographer on site. We adjusted several poses on the fly, switching props frequently from umbrella to instrument to round fan. Yet the final results successfully showcased the distinct features of this costume.
