To catch the final application deadline for the Guangzhou CICF free pass, I really pushed myself to dig out all the photoshoot sets I had accumulated recently. Honestly, preparing outfits, props, wigs, and makeup before any convention is always a massive project. Take this black-and-white Maid outfit cosplay, for example: to achieve the best look on-site, I added a petticoat for optimal skirt volume. The combination of white stockings and leg garters not only highlighted White stockings and beautiful legs with flattering proportions, but also had to stay securely in place without slipping down while walking. I paired it with white platform shoes—great for added height, though walking around the venue all day in them is definitely a brutal test of endurance. During the street snap portion, in order to capture the most natural dynamic shot, I ran back and forth carrying a cardboard box several times before getting the perfect frame.
The other Fantasy style cosplay sets were equally demanding on details. For instance, the white mage outfit with a blue cape required the waist stitching and gold embroidery to be smoothed out meticulously. Paired with tall white boots and white stockings, it was prone to overexposure under harsh lighting, making angle and light selection on location crucial. Another exotic ensemble featuring dark blue hair and a turquoise dress involved significant skin exposure and intricate leg straps; before shooting, I had to carefully adjust each strap to avoid leaving marks while preventing wardrobe malfunctions. For that natural outdoor lighting set, we spent a long time capturing backlit shots during sunset on a park bench, where the angle of the parasol's shadow and the sunlight had to be precisely controlled.
The studio backdrops were another highlight. The blue-and-white piano theme, flanked by intricate white flowers and a crescent moon backdrop, demanded exacting light and shadow work—the slightest deviation in color temperature would ruin the cool-toned ambiance. Meanwhile, for the elf outfit wielding a massive weapon prop, styling the wig and drawing the forehead mark took considerable time. Because the weapon was so long and heavy, I had to engage my core firmly while posing, otherwise the posture would appear stiff.
Moreover, Guangzhou's weather is always a challenge for cosplayers shooting outdoors. The temperature gap and humidity between indoor and outdoor venues make wigs frizzier, while base makeup requires constant powder touch-ups to suppress shine. To keep up my stamina and look fresh across the hall, I usually pack a pair of flat shoes for breaks and carry a mini sewing kit in case of seam rips. Every time I cosplay at an anime convention—whether for an official free-pass or simply to hang out with friends—the upfront preparation and perseverance on-site represent a genuine respect for the character. Though exhausting, seeing the final images makes every bit of effort worthwhile.
