This shoot took place during the peak cherry blossom season, featuring Tomoyo Sakagami cosplay from CLANNAD. The pre-production primarily centered on preparing the costume and styling; I searched through numerous custom tailors before finalizing this school uniform, where the navy inner layer and red-and-white striped cuffs were essential details. During makeup testing, I noticed the silver wig is very demanding on skin tone, so I kept the foundation very fair while designing the eye makeup to capture her expression—subtly sharp yet retaining a teenage girl's gentleness.
The wind was quite strong on the day of the shoot, constantly blowing my hair around, which meant constantly tidying my bangs with a small comb. My hand pose was originally planned to grip the school bag strap, but because the heavy wind kept disrupting everything, I simply crossed both hands over my chest, which unexpectedly produced a gentle and poised look. The location was set beside a slope, mainly utilizing sakura branches as foreground bokeh to obscure the bustling crowd. Opening the aperture wide, the soft pink backdrop functioned as the best natural reflector.
The illumination came from the natural light of mid-to-late afternoon, where the side-backlight traced a translucent glow along the edges of the silver hair and made my skin appear crystal-clear. The key to post-processing was unifying the sakura pink color palette, preserving the original lighting depth while infusing that distinct Japanese-style warm-and-cool contrast. After discarding many outtakes, we finally selected the key portraits for release. In bringing Tomoyo to life, the hardest challenge lay in capturing her aura. She usually appears quiet and reserved, yet harbors a deeply tender heart. Posing required restraint—avoiding overly radiant smiles while letting warmth shine through the eyes, a delicate balance refined countless times before the mirror.
I rarely shoot such tender, gentle themes, as I usually lean toward sharper, cooler character styles. Taking on this gentle yet resolute heroine felt like a significant challenge, especially while worrying about creasing the uniform or compromising small details during poses. Fortunately, the photographer was exceptionally patient, waiting alongside me until passersby cleared before pressing the shutter, making the final result of this Spring photography shoot exceed expectations.
The shooting day fell at the end of March when the wind was filled with the fragrance of petals; standing beneath the blooming trees truly evoked the romantic feeling of Anime-style photography. Titled around bringing 2D magic into spring, shooting in this special season brought genuine inner comfort. During a brief break, I enjoyed a sakura-flavored ice cream from a nearby convenience store, fully immersing myself in the setting. After finishing, we sat by the slope for a long time watching people pass by, feeling as though we had truly wandered through the world where the character once lived.
Reviewing the photos during selection made me feel this set was truly worth sharing. The fabric texture of the uniform turned out beautifully, the red-and-white stripes at the collar looked luminous under the sunlight, and the school bag coordinated flawlessly. This Sakura cosplay was a wonderful experience, and I look forward to cosplaying other looks from this series in the future.
