When shooting this set of Motoori Kosuzu Cosplay photos, I specifically picked an afternoon with exceptionally clear and translucent sunlight. Because the character's setting contains many elements of "books" and "paper," I abandoned conventional indoor studio shoots for my scene selection, choosing instead an outdoor environment featuring Chinese-style garden corridors, pillars, and rockeries. This architectural color palette of interwoven vermilion and teal actually offers a beautiful contrast and echo with the red-and-white plaid and green lace layers of the costume.
There are quite a lot of details in this costume, especially those wide plaid sleeves; although they look very elegant, they can easily get blown messy by the wind during the shoot, obscuring the body lines. I communicated with the photographer beforehand about the dynamic feel I wanted to present, such as jumping to catch the skirt hem and leaning against the pillars, both of which were calculated around the angles of incoming light and shadow positions. The golden bells on the wig are also a crowning touch, producing soft chiming sounds with subtle movements, which helped me maintain a more relaxed state in front of the lens.
The advantage of garden exterior natural light is that the skin tone looks extremely soft and natural, saving a lot of tedious skin-smoothing work in post-production. The most interesting part of shooting a character like this is not just recreating a static image, but finding that lightweight, slightly playful flow belonging to her. Letting the skirt hem spin in the sunlight instantly changes the entire aura of the photos.
Although we frequently had to avoid tourists during the shoot, the final photos featuring dappled tree shadows in the sunlight falling across the white skirt and vermilion pillars delivered a texture indeed much more vivid than a pure studio setup. The chemistry with the photographer was excellent this time, and the light and shadow on every window frame were beautifully captured for this cosplay photography set.
