[Laffey cosplay] Azur Lane: Lazy White and Blue Moments by the Roadblock

I finally got my hands on these cosplay event photos shot outside during the Firefly ACG Expo! Teacher Afan's shooting techniques and color grading approach perfectly suited the outdoor sunlight and street environment at the time. Because the lighting that day was truly great and the sunshine was so translucent, paired with the white-and-blue outfit, the overall picture turned out very refreshing. We intentionally chose this corner near the parking lot entrance, where the yellow markings on the ground and the red traffic roadblocks nearby provided a striking color contrast that highlighted the focal point of the shot.

For the makeup and styling this time, we mainly reproduced the sailor collar and blue bowtie elements, combined with white thigh-high socks and cute white sneakers to create a lazy, effortless vibe. Compared to overly neat studio shoots, I actually really enjoy this kind of outdoor photography integrated into real-life scenes—especially being able to interact with common items like roadblocks, such as crouching beside them or leaning against them, which lets the character's presence feel more relaxed and natural, avoiding a stiff, over-posed look.

Teacher Afan put a lot of thought into the composition. Beyond standard eye-level angles, a high-angle overhead shot captured a remarkably vivid moment, making the character's proportions feel very approachable. There were a few small surprises during the shoot, like passing vehicles, but this actually trained our ability to capture candid moments in real environments. I remember adjusting my standing and crouching poses several times, attempting to infuse some of my own understanding into the character while preserving her original personality. In particular, the off-the-shoulder styling paired with appropriate tattoo stickers added a casual, crisp touch without appearing overly delicate.

When I received the unedited photos, I felt the light and shadow were captured brilliantly. The strong noon sunlight didn't blow out the costume details; instead, it gave the white fabric and hair strands a lovely translucent texture. The natural folds and flowing movement of the clothes as I walked and jumped gave the images vibrant vitality. Beside the jumping GIFs, I personally lean towards those portraits where I'm leaning against the roadblock—that look of staring blankly into the distance feels very true to the character's everyday lazy mood. The outdoor makeup and hair held up well too; despite the rising outdoor temperature, there was no noticeable makeup wear or messy hair.

Every outdoor shoot, especially taking cosplay event photos, feels like a collaborative experience with friends. The photographer has to monitor the light, angles, and keep passersby or out-of-place elements out of the background, while we in front of the lens do our best to manage expressions and poses. In these photos, I feel those seemingly accidental moments yielded the best results. The post-processing color tones avoided being overly heavy or exaggerated, preserving natural light-and-shadow relationships instead. I personally love this collision of authentic daily-life vibes with anime style; I can feel the photographer's dedication, while also feeling that I pushed my own expressiveness this time.
