[Yakumo Yukari cosplay] Touhou Project Master of Boundaries in Gensokyo: Gorgeous Touhou fanon Style Studio Shoot

This shoot features a Yakumo Yukari cosplay setup leaning toward Touhou fanon derivative creation. While retaining the character's original core traits, the overall style incorporates more elegant and gorgeous Lolita fashion elements. Paired with a pure purple studio background, I personally love the final visual results.

Let's first discuss the design concept behind this entire look. To fit Yukari Yakumo's lore, the hairstyle features a light blonde long straight wig, which is one of the character's most distinctive traits. I intentionally preserved fluffiness in the strands to make the head contour look fuller. For eye makeup, purple contact lenses slightly elongated the eye shape, paired with cool-toned eyeshadow to make the gaze appear deeper, reflecting the mysterious and composed demeanor of the Youkai Sage. The base makeup was kept overall pale and matte to echo this non-human character setting.

As for costume choice, I tried an outfit leaning toward a Touhou fanon style. The entire outfit adopts a classic purple, black, and pink color scheme, with dark purple as the main tone, accented by striking red bows at the chest and collar that add bright visual highlights. The black choker collar paired with a black underbust corset panelling design not only flatters the figure but also enriches overall outfit layering. Abundant pink ruffles on the cuffs and skirt hem serve as a defining feature of this look, lending a rich, gorgeous sense of volume. The high-low skirt design is especially effective at displaying leg lines during dynamic poses.

Prop coordination was also a core focus of this shoot. The long-handled umbrella is a main prop I really love, specially chosen with a black canopy, pink ruffled edges, and long red ribbons. Opening the umbrella during the shoot creates a massive semi-circular backdrop resembling a blooming black flower, with cascading red ribbons offering great spatial extension. Another interesting prop was a white human skull, which injected a touch of gothic ambiance into the entire look. Interacting with the skull through playful or slightly arrogant gestures effectively reflected Yukari's commonly portrayed mischievous and cunningly villainous nature in Touhou fanon.

During shooting, key communication with the photographer centered on composing frames using the large umbrella and skirt. Due to the umbrella's large volume, opening angles required careful adjustment to avoid blocking the face or cluttering the frame. We utilized several distinct poses, including standing quietly while supporting the umbrella with one hand, close-ups holding the skull, and snapshots of swishing the skirt hem. The dynamic shots lifting the skirt specifically highlighted black lace-up platform heels paired with sheer black stockings—a styling combination wildly popular in fan creations of this character, adding a touch of elegant sensuality while maintaining mystery.

The advantage of a studio shoot lies in total light control. This time, a clean taro purple background was chosen, harmonizing beautifully with the costume's colors while avoiding cluttered distractions, allowing visual focus to fall entirely on the subject. Before shooting, I spent considerable effort on hair and makeup prep, particularly grooming the wig to ensure flowiness, fine-tuning the curves of the bangs and hair ends. Reviewing raw shots from that day, the color coordination between props and costume felt exceptionally unified. Although holding the heavy umbrella and props throughout the shoot took considerable physical stamina, bringing a conceived fanon image into concrete reality via Anime cosplay was deeply satisfying. The charm of fanon cosplay based on original work lies precisely in its vast creative space, allowing personal expression in every step from outfit selection to makeup and poses.
