I finally managed to capture this Reitaisai look for Touhou Project's Reimu Hakurei! Cosplaying Reimu has always been a dream of mine, and to bring it to life, I specifically chose this red-and-white ensemble blending a Lolita aesthetic with folkloric patterned fabrics. Crafting and fitting the headpiece and the plush pom-poms across the chest took tremendous care. For the wig, I preserved her classic black hair while adding subtle braided accents, which, paired with the voluminous sleeves and layered tiered skirt, delivered immense visual grandeur.
The outfit provided incredible textural depth during the shoot—especially the large swath of patterned fabric held in hand, which was actually quite heavy and required slow, deliberate posing adjustments to avoid catching the hem underfoot. Photo 2 is a full-body mirror selfie showing the graceful curve of the skirt alongside platform shoes, which supported my proportions beautifully beneath the voluminous flare. Photo 1 focuses on upper-body details: woven cord knots, the colorful sash, and the gold-filigree ornament set on a blue base at the chest, rendering metal and lace textures with crisp clarity in close-up.
Shooting self-portraits indoors in this attire was quite a test of camera angles and lighting. Because it was an overcast day, the gentle daylight brought out the subtle prints and damask patterns in the fabric without blowing out the highlights. The overall palette leaned into a vintage crimson that resonated naturally with Reimu's iconic visual identity. Creating this look stemmed from my enduring love for the Touhou series; while the bustling convention energy of Reitaisai is unmatched, documenting this look at home was a uniquely special experience in its own right.
My shoulders felt a bit sore after wrapping up today, but seeing the faithful character reproduction made it completely worthwhile. The styling is packed with countless details—smoothing out every layer of lace along the cuffs and collar, and fine-tuning the petticoat's volume just enough to support the skirt's flare. Moving forward, I might experiment with restyling the outer patterned fabric to see if other variations can emerge. Crafting costumes and capturing photos is an ongoing journey of refinement, dedicated to conveying the character's spirit through wardrobe and poise. That wraps it up for today—time to pack up and rest!
