Shooting this winter snow shrine maiden outfit was much colder than imagined, but to recreate the winter aesthetic of Touhou Project Reimu Hakurei Cosplay's classic red-and-white color palette, we chose a partially thawed snowy woods for the shoot. In terms of styling, the inner layer of this winter outfit features a fur collar design, which provided great warmth during long periods standing in the snow. The red-and-white layered effect is distinct: the upper body features delicate lace and red dotted accents; the red-and-white waist corset incorporates brocade and golden buckle details; the outer red skirt is adorned with subtle jacquard crane patterns, with ruffles and tassels trimming the hem. The oversized red bow headdress edged with white lace produced a gorgeous translucent glow under backlighting. For props, I held talismans and a staff decorated with pink flowers. The shoot primarily utilized wide-aperture Backlit portrait techniques, where natural light filtering through the woods formed a perfect rim light around the silhouette. One important note is that snow acts as a massive natural reflector, so exposure needed to be slightly lowered to prevent overexposing the face. To add dimension, standing poses were chosen to flare out the skirt hem as much as possible. Pairing White stockings with the red skirt was a highlight of this winter ensemble; to flatter the leg lines, framing the full body required finding the right camera position and utilizing a wide-angle lens to elongate proportions. Additionally, blurred foreground elements like flowers and talismans served as key compositional touches. The wind was fairly strong during the shoot, easily messing up hair and ribbons, which required constant adjustments to positioning and facial expressions. Overall, combining snow, decorative pennants, and backlighting created a wonderful winter ambiance for this red-and-white shrine maiden outfit.
