Shooting Marisa Kirisame in Xiamen's winter bald cypress forest feels as though the magic of the season has been sealed into the orange-red frames. Unlike the fiery red of maple leaves, the color of bald cypress carries a touch of gentleness and tranquility, which happens to form a nice warm-and-cool contrast with the black and white costume I prepared. On the day of the shoot, navigating through the muddy ground covered with dead leaves with heavy props was hard work, but the final photos fit this natural outdoor location unexpectedly well. With branches intertwining overhead and sunlight casting dappled shadows through the gaps, it captured the exact forest atmosphere I was chasing.
When it comes to the overall look, the most energy-consuming part was undoubtedly restoring the details of the costume and props. This black dress with white lace trim required multiple layers of underskirts to prop up enough volume, and the matching red printed scarf served as a finishing touch in the frame, balancing out the heaviness brought by the black garment. I used stiff tulle for a second styling of the ruffles on the hat to ensure it maintained its rounded profile even when the outdoor wind blew. The lantern and broom in my hands can be called the soul props of a mage. Especially for that broom with a black-and-white spiral handle, I reinforced the bottom so it could stand steadily on the forest mud. Although running around the woods carrying all this was quite a test of physical strength, this is exactly the daily fun of cosplaying.
The photographer @云间glow was extremely thoughtful with the camera positions this time, capturing both wide scenic shots of the trees with great depth and low-angle shots close to the ground. The one that left the deepest impression on me was the shot where I tried leaning against that row of bamboo fences, which is the one I chose for the cover. To express the character's composure and agility, I intentionally leaned my center of gravity slightly forward, resting my left hand on the fence while holding the broom naturally with my right hand, extending my legs slightly to reveal the white thigh-high socks decorated with bows. The pairing of white thigh-high socks and black leather shoes not only fits the character's consistent aesthetic styling but also shows clear visual layers against the red-orange background. During the shoot, fallen leaves would drift onto the brim of my hat from time to time, forcing us to pause a few times to blow them away, which counts as a sort of natural interaction.
Regarding winter in Xiamen, many people feel that there are no real snowflakes or autumn leaves, but the bald cypress forest is actually a seasonal gift unique to this city. The color palette here isn't as intense as the golden yellows or deep reds of the north, but rather a warm orange filled with the gentle atmosphere of the south. When shooting this kind of vintage-style natural scene, I don't really like using overly heavy filters; I rely more on the photographer's on-site lighting and the outline of natural light. The transition between highlights and shadows in the final photos remains very soft, preserving the dark details of the clothes while rendering the veins of the dry branches and the feathery foliage of the bald cypress into clear layers, keeping the frame clean and pure.
Although I needed to precisely control my expressions and the fluidity of my poses in front of the lens, during breaks, I always enjoyed observing the surroundings. Watching the sky gradually darken and the reflection on the water turn from orange-red to deep blue, time seemed to stand still at that moment. As a cosplayer, I feel that restoring a character isn't just about wearing the right clothes and the right wig; more importantly, it's about finding the spiritual temperament and ambient atmosphere that resonates with them. This bald cypress forest adventure, whether in terms of the proper comfort provided by the costume or the integration of the props and scenery, made me feel incredibly rewarded. I hope this set of photos can convey that peaceful and wonderful magical atmosphere I felt at the time to everyone who sees it.
