Shooting this look of Mai Shiranui's Hanafuda skin actually involved a lot of thought into the details, especially the fixing of the headpieces and the flow of the white wig. To present that lightweight feel of hair strands blowing in the wind from the poster, we adjusted the fan's position and speed during the dynamic shoot, letting the wig float up while maintaining styling continuity instead of messily pasting onto my face. In terms of costume, this outfit features a rich sense of layering—the stand-up collar, wide red-and-black color-blocked sleeves, purple waist belt, and the ring of red tassel charms on the leg armor; each layer of clothing stacking and tightening increases visual complexity. Straightening the outfit before the shoot took a lot of time, particularly tightening the waist belt while ensuring the folding fan pattern on the chest stayed precisely centered.
For scene selection, to fit this gorgeous yet cool-toned Japanese theme of the Hanafuda skin, we specially found a real-scene studio with Japanese tatami mats and shoji doors. Utilizing the warm yellow light source of paper lanterns as the primary light, combined with the environment's dark areas leaking from the doorway, formed a very natural contrast of light and shadow. In Figures 1 and 3, I adopted a sitting posture to present the character's dignified and elegant side, with the lens capturing the highlights cast by lantern light onto the face and leg armor from different angles. As for the dynamic snapshot in Figure 2, it aimed to express this female ninja's agile and sharp temperament, watching the wide sleeve hems spread out during spins and hand waves; the captured effect indeed carries strong tension for this piece of Cosplay photography.
The makeup was also specially adapted. The eyeshadow selected leaned towards a cool-toned light purple, echoing the purple satin ribbons on the costume. With elongated eyeliner, the gaze appears sharper in front of the lens. The foundation pursued a clean and translucent look, paired with a nude lip gloss to keep the entire face from looking cluttered due to too many colors on the apparel. Shooting such a heavily modified character actually consumes a lot of physical energy. The irregular leg armor combined with high-heeled soles are not only heavy but also limit ankle flexibility; making natural movements required repeatedly adjusting my center of gravity. However, the team synchronized perfectly, and the photographer kept adjusting the lighting angles in time, especially the warm light position of the paper lanterns, which was highly helpful in sculpting facial contours, beautifully avoiding the problem of flat facial features caused by overly heavy shadows.
The entire set of photos did not undergo excessive post-processing filter stacking, mainly relying on solid pre-production light and shadow arrangements to present the costume's inherent texture and color contrast. This red-white-purple-gold color scheme apparel carries a strong visual impact in itself; as long as the lighting setup remains clean, the final results won't be bad. Although my waist ached and back pained after the shoot, seeing the magnificent postures presented in the lens made me feel all the hard preparations had been well rewarded.
