[Shimoe Koharu cosplay] Blue Archive Convention Photos: Lighting Setup and Shooting Breakdown

Shooting convention photos of Shimoe Koharu from Blue Archive at the Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo offered a wealth of practical on-site experience from prep to delivery. To tame the chaotic, shifting ambient light inside and outside the hall, we invested heavy thought into our portable strobe setup. The key light was a Jinbei HD250max mounted in an 80cm octabox, triggered by a Jinbei Q7III (Sony edition), paired with a Sony A7 IV camera body. This setup performed reliably amidst the packed convention bustle. The octabox excelled at casting smooth, flattering facial illumination that overpowered harsh ambient top-lighting near the venue perimeter, yielding translucent, organic skin tones. The straight-out-of-camera Sony color rendering was remarkably true to life, preserving generous dynamic range for color grading.

Wig styling and cosmetics laid the character foundation. Koharu's pink gradient tresses required careful blending from the darker roots, along with a natural trim across the fringe. The floating pink halo and black wing hairclips tilted easily while walking; habitually steadying them with one hand ended up providing an endearing, candid pose in Photo 2. Makeup emphasized rosy tones coordinated with matching pink circle lenses to capture her flustered, endearing personality. The wardrobe featured a pale blue ruffled dress trimmed with red stripes and violet pleats along the hem. Sitting on a white folding chair in Photo 4 allowed the skirts to fan out naturally while elongating leg lines, paired with deep crimson Mary Jane pumps to complete the look.

The doujinshi prop stamped with 'R18' across the cover was picked up on the dealer floor—an unmistakably perfect match for her canon quirks. We scouted several corners with cleaner ambient light; given the dense crowd, background distractions were inevitable, so we shot wide open with a fast prime to melt the cluttered setting into creamy bokeh. The photographer coached diverse poses with the book, from shielding the chest with both hands in Photo 1 to holding it loosely at my side in Photo 3. Constrained by limited floor space, our focus stayed locked on leveraging portable Jinbei lighting to carve out pristine compositions in tight quarters.

Micro-adjusting light placement demanded the sharpest focus. Shifting the strobe position even slightly altered facial shadow transitions and dimensionality. Navigating high-contrast environments, we tweaked power output in real time via the Q7III trigger and tested various modifier distances, striking the sweet spot between subject pop and ambient hall mood. Despite the fast pace of convention shooting, reviewing each playback on the monitor brought immense creative satisfaction, serving as both a character study and a test of on-the-spot improvisation.
