As a classic Vocaloid character, braving the still-glaring sunlight of late summer in Italy, we finally finished shooting this outdoor Hatsune Miku cosplay set for an Italy photoshoot booking. The weather was still a bit muggy, but to catch this last bit of midsummer breath, we started running right on the streets. Choosing this cyan-and-white color-blocked sportswear was mainly because of its lively colors, which can present a great translucent feel under strong outdoor light.
Let's talk about the styling first. The cyan twintails wig really takes some thought to manage; to increase layers and dynamic feel, I specially braided it into thick braids. The wig is prone to getting frizzy when running and jumping, so it needs to be recombed and spray-set before every shoot. The white headband, metal hairpin, and headphones are key accessories to fix the styling. In terms of makeup, to match the strong outdoor light, I deepened the red-toned eyeshadow and orange-red lip glaze, making the face look more three-dimensional under natural light, and the worn cyan contact lenses also perfectly echoed the hair color.
The shooting location was chosen in streets and parks full of exotic charm. This outfit itself carries a bit of sporty casual style, so I deliberately avoided stiff, standing poses. Leaning against the red-and-yellow traffic signs, balancing on one leg beside the crosswalk, or squatting by the roadside leaning out—the feedback for these poses was very natural. The photographer used a large-aperture lens to blur the vehicles and trees in the background, and when I reached out toward the lens, the strong perspective sense pulled the frame closer to the viewer. To capture the moment of running, we tried repeatedly several times; because the movement amplitude was large, ensuring both facial expressions and focus were clear at the same time placed high demands on grasping the snapshot timing.
Besides the streets, the wooden benches and children's slides in the park were also great framing locations. During the break sitting on the slide holding a mineral water bottle, sunlight dappled through the leaves onto the clothing. Squatting for too long or lying down for overhead shots really tests core strength, especially running back and forth on the stone-paved road wearing white mid-tube socks and sneakers, which consumed quite a bit of physical energy. However, looking at the blending of background tones in the final photos—the deep green of the leaves, the red and yellow of the signs, and the bright cyan of the clothes—the visual effects of these colors colliding under the sunlight made me feel that the scorching sun and sweat were totally worth it.
What this photo set wants to convey is a sense of vibrant energy of running recklessly in midsummer filled with heartbeats. There's no need to deliberately strike poses; playing, jumping naturally in a real outdoor environment, and feeling the direction of the wind often allow the lens to capture the most vivid moments. This shoot also gave me a deeper understanding of outdoor dynamic portraits, where interacting with environmental props is often more infectious than just standing there.
