Attending the convention this time, I completed the shoot for this Hatsune Miku look directly on site. The main color palette of the costume selected a silver-and-white metallic luster fabric, which, under the illumination of the overhead lights high up in the exhibition hall, can reflect highly layered, colorful brilliance. The silver bow at the neckline and the plush sleeves on the arms added some soft details to the overall look, forming a contrast with the hard coating texture of the clothing. The hairstyle features the signature blue twin-tails, additionally mixed with laser holographic hair extensions to present a five-colored gradient effect under light refraction, while the silver cross-star hair ornament at the top of the head plays an excellentę¶ę (gathering) role. This makes for a stunning Silver-white outfit.
For the makeup, I selected bright blue contact lenses paired with a light-colored lip glaze, and the eye makeup was embellished with subtle highlight glitters; this can enhance the clarity of the gaze, making the overall temperament closer to the visual impression brought by the character herself. The convention venue was very densely crowded, and dealing with a messy background was the primary issue to solve during shooting. To get a clean composition, we specially selected an empty space next to a pillar in the venue, laying a gray plush round rug on the floor. Through a half-kneeling pose to lower the visual center of gravity, we could not only effectively avoid the crowded passersby and complex exhibition facilities in the background but also concentrate the visual focus on details such as the layers of the skirt hem, the lines of the waist, and the lace bindings on the legs. This is an essential technique for high-quality convention photos.
The actual shooting process on site was highly physically consuming, requiring a rapid switch of status between motion and stillness. Photographer Qiujiu captured snapshots while I adjusted my actions. I had to ensure that when striking poses with hands overlapping or arms raised, the bow at the neckline and the transparent fish-fin-like material decorations on the back maintained a smooth status, avoiding awkward wrinkles or reflection dead angles. Because the venue's overhead lights had a cold and relatively harsh color temperature, which easily cast deep shadows on the face, it was necessary to find the right angle and slightly lift the face to capture the soft light. This is a common challenge in Cosplay photography.
During intervals of waiting for the setup and snapshot captures, it was also necessary to occasionally clean the dust off the plush sleeves and metallic skirt hem with a soft brush to maintain the translucent feel of the clothing materials. The standing composition leaned more toward showcasing the overall vertical drape of the costume, whereas the kneeling pose highlighted the resonance between the hand plush decorations and leg details through centripetal body lines. Compared to pure studio shoots, although the live lights of the convention are complex, this relatively cool venue light instead coincidentally matched the icy baseline of this silver-white main color-palette attire. Paired with the semi-transparent wavy fabric along the edge of the skirt hem, under slow shutter speeds and the capture of frozen moments, it can display an exceptionally exquisite texture.
Every time doing an outdoor shoot at a convention, just the management of the wig and the wearing of the costume takes a lot of energy. From the symmetrical positioning of hair ornaments to the tightness adjustment of the leg rings, every step needs fine adjustments on site based on the overall visual balance. Releasing this set of prints today, although the physical consumption on site was massive and there were many uncontrollable environmental factors, seeing the two frozen final cuts in the camera makes me feel that all preparations and efforts on site were highly worth it. I hope everyone can also find their own shooting fun at conventions through professional Cosplay photography.
