When cosplaying Cartethyia this time, I was actually quite nervous in my heart, because this character has a unique temperament that requires meticulous consideration through makeup, styling, facial expressions, and even the arc of movements. This time at the Changsha Anime Convention venue, I completed the shoot for this set of convention photos amid the lively atmosphere.
During the preparation stage, putting on the elf ears took a lot of thought because it had to blend with the natural stray hairs on my forehead to make the position of the ears look subtly realistic. The braiding of the wig and the layering of the overall headwear were also relatively complex. Along with those blue contact lenses, once worn, my gaze and demeanor were uncontrollably drawn by the character's temperament. The costume features a color-blocked design of black, blue, and white; the choker around the neck and the golden decorative details along the edges of the clothing visually enhance the character's aloofness and sense of mystery. Although the temperature on the day of the shoot wasn't particularly low, and the venue was crowded with people, walking around in this set of gear definitely tested my physical endurance. However, seeing the final photos made me feel that all the early effort was completely worth it.
On the day of the shoot, the photographer caught a relatively good state in the crowd. The ambient lighting at the venue was more complex than expected, with a dim background interwoven with sudden colorful studio lights, which posed quite a test for metering and composition. In terms of on-the-spot improvisation, the photographer very cleverly used a gold-and-white prop as the foreground for blurred blocking. This compositional technique not only gave the frame a strong sense of depth but also formed a natural frame, focusing the character right at the visual center.
At that time, I tried extending my hand, wanting to make a pose akin to guiding or inviting the audience into this fantasy world. This action not only increased the interactivity of the frame but also added a touch of relaxation beneath the aloof exterior. You know, if you try too hard to force a pose in front of the lens, it will look rigid instead. Being able to naturally capture a state that aligns with the character's persona this time is inseparable from the photographer's continuous encouragement and guidance behind the camera. Combined on-site lighting's cool blue tone echoing the character's hair and blue eyes, the atmosphere of the entire photo was pulled to a very full state.
Every time shooting inside an exhibition hall, one needs to quickly adapt to the surrounding noise. But when you are truly immersed in this character, the surrounding shouts and shutter sounds turn into white noise, leaving only the silent exchange between you and the photographer regarding composition, angles, and lighting positions. During this process, we were actually applying a minimalist approach most of the time—excluding the redundant, cluttered background, and leaving the aspect we wanted to express most through light, shadow, and composition. For me, every time I cosplay, it is not just a recreation of a look, but a deep dialogue with the work.
This set of convention photos captured a very warm moment. Although managing the staff prop and long hair made moving around the venue a bit difficult, it is precisely this immersive experience that makes Cosplay so full of charm. Looking back at the photos with this feeling recorded on-site, it turns out to be another very happy shooting experience.
