"Fearing street-side rouge shades, willow catkins touch white snow and rouge red"—though this line comes from the original post, it truly fits the visual aesthetic of this shoot. This time, inspired by Cheshire from Azur Lane, I attempted a Traditional Chinese style Qipao cosplay. I selected a red-dominant modified halter backless Traditional Chinese style Qipao; the velvet fabric exhibited wonderful jacquard-like shadow texture under the lights. Golden embroidered petal totems on the chest and sides, along with frog buttons and piped trims, infused the character's anime framework with rich classical Chinese charm. Paired with a white fur shawl, it struck a fine balance between warmth and stylish volume. To complement the high-slit design, matching White garter stockings with lace trim were chosen to better accentuate leg lines during shooting, which was finalized after multiple fittings and adjustments beforehand.
For hair and makeup, I wore a short wig featuring a grey-white base with blue under-dye highlights, and the bangs were trimmed straight and neat, faithfully recreating the character's signature look. Combined with light blue contact lenses, it gave the gaze a clearer, more luminous feel. The makeup followed a clean, crisp direction, emphasizing the eyelashes and eyeliner, while opting for a softer rose bean-paste lip color so it wouldn't overpower the high-contrast clash of the red and white outfit.
The environmental setup for the shoot was quite detailed. We used large folding screens as the backdrop, featuring expansive pink peony prints and ink-wash textured foliage, complemented by a large blue-and-white porcelain vase on the side and assorted red-and-white faux flowers, crafting a comprehensive classical Chinese setting. To match this warm and ethereal atmosphere, the photographer utilized strong top lighting as the key light. This lighting setup really puts styling coordination to the test; highlights hitting the white fur shawl and the white lace headpiece created a dreamy soft-glow effect, rendering the overall image bright and sweet.
To add a natural visual breathing room to the frame, I incorporated a red folding fan with black ribs during the shoot. A folding fan is an extremely practical prop: it can extend hand gestures, partially veil the face, or rest across the lap in seated poses to act as a visual anchor. We experimented with several posing ideas, such as raising a hand to draw the shawl, looking back over the shoulder, and a one-leg-raised seated pose. This seated pose easily elongated the visual proportions, which, alongside the white high heels and White garter stockings, made the intended alluring ambiance even more dynamic. Furthermore, when holding the fan, I wore matching red arm sleeves so the exposed arms wouldn't look too bare.
Overall, although combining plush fur accents with breezy garter stockings posed a bit of a temperature contradiction during shooting, the final results met all expectations. This shoot deepened my understanding of handling traditional Chinese style garments, and I am very grateful for the patience during initial fittings and prop preparations. A great cosplay piece requires precise mastery of everything from fabric selection and hair/makeup synergy to ambient lighting harmony. What satisfies me most about this Qipao look is the striking contrast between red velvet and white fur—carrying both the sweetness of an anime character and the elegance of traditional attire. That is precisely the visual experience this Cosplay photography intended to convey.
