[Ruan Mei cosplay] Honkai: Star Rail: Walking Through That Field of Peaceful Slumber

I finished shooting this Ruan Mei cosplay set a while back but hadn't had time to organize the photos until now. Coincidentally, inspired by the joke about pulling E1S1 (1+1) on the banner right before the official free character giveaway, I pulled out the behind-the-scenes thoughts and feelings from the shoot to chat about. As usual, the makeup, photography, and post-processing were handled by old friends at August Light & Shadow Studio, who are extremely experienced at capturing Ancient style portrait aesthetics with a hint of celestial elegance. So I felt quite confident about recreating Ruan Mei's artistic concept.

I feel the core temperament of Ruan Mei lies in that ultimate classical beauty paired with a touch of detachment. So for costume selection, we specifically chose this blue-and-white color-blocked modified traditional garment instead of overly loud, vivid colors, making it look much more elegant and refined. The pearl necklace across her chest and the neck collar knots serve as the visual focal points of the entire look, crafted with great delicacy. Combined with long bluish-purple gloves, it preserves the character's fantasy vibe while seamlessly integrating traditional Chinese style outfit elements. The overall texture and detail of costume, makeup, and props exceeded my expectations; especially the drape of the fabric, which rendered fantastic light and shadow effects in front of the camera. For hair accessories, yellow leaf-shaped pieces were chosen to pair with long black hair, forming a lovely visual accent under warm-toned lighting.

Speaking of props, the yueqin in hand was the centerpiece of this cosplay. The instrument's body features a dark blue base finish with cyan vortex patterns, bordered in gold with exceptionally rich details, and the strings and tuning pegs were meticulously crafted. Holding such a substantial prop naturally makes one stand taller and straighter. Besides the yueqin, there was a white floral round fan, as well as porcelain teapots and cups on the tea table. These minor props played a vital role in enriching the scene's atmosphere, allowing the character to quickly immerse in the tea-room aesthetic of sipping tea and admiring flowers.

The composition of light and shadow during shooting was another critical element. We arranged several lanterns with traditional Chinese bamboo-woven and paper frames to create a warm yellow, dark-toned atmosphere. The backlight created a lovely glow along the hair strands while making skin tones look translucent and soft. Combined with shallow depth-of-field, solid wood furniture in the background, displayed red pomegranate fruits, and arranged red leaves with plum blossom branches served as wonderful accents. This gave the frame rich layering without overwhelming the subject, evoking a peaceful, serene mood. I also attempted a pose holding the fan with closed eyes, where that relaxed and tranquil feeling was captured beautifully under the warm glow.

I actually really enjoy shooting in quiet indoor environments like this—it requires less dynamic physical positioning and focuses more on emotional expression and eye contact. In the story, Ruan Mei often exhibits a detached, indifferent attitude toward the world. Through static seated poses, playing an instrument, or holding flowers and a fan, it is actually easier to express her soft yet distant demeanor. The process of taking this set was very relaxing, akin to sitting in a tea house chatting with friends on an autumn afternoon. During actual shooting, my favorites were those shots holding the yueqin or fan while looking straight into the camera; direct eye contact with the lens instantly closes the distance between character and viewer while maintaining her inherent elegance and poise.

Finally, getting back to the post mentioning Hoyoverse giving away the character for free: while spending my own money to pull E1S1 back then did feel like a bit of a "stab in the back," it also proved from another angle that this character's charm is genuinely recognized by everyone. Integrating in-game experiences into Cosplay photography gives the whole endeavor a deeper sense of participation and story. We avoided overly exaggerated adjustments in post-processing this time, focusing instead on maintaining a classical, warm texture. I hope this photoset allows everyone to appreciate Ruan Mei under different lights and poses, as well as our dedication to treating every photoshoot with care.
