From the initial concept, this visual project for Phrolova was meant to break away from conventional studio shoots by fusing dark Gothic style with classical grandeur. To achieve the intense visual collision of red, black, and white, tremendous thought went into costumes and props during pre-production. The most striking element of the attire is the red-and-white floral embellishment at the chest, alongside the red ribbon wraps winding around the arms and calves. Getting dressed required repeated adjustments to ensure they hugged the body contours snugly without slipping down during dynamic poses. The wig was styled in mint green with blunt bangs, paired with red eyeshadow and colored contacts to emphasize deep eye contours.
For set design, we hauled in an ornate silver high-back chair with embossed relief as the visual anchor. The chair's metallic luster reflected the ambient red studio lighting brilliantly. Additionally, to enrich visual layering, I prepared a violin, a vintage birdcage, a chessboard, golden candelabras, and scattered beds of vibrant red roses. Most notably, a skeleton model was integrated; stacking these elements created a haunting atmosphere where life, death, opulence, and decay intertwined. Setting up the table involved meticulously fine-tuning the placement of the chessboard, teacups, and goblets to ensure every single prop told its own narrative within the frame.
Body language during the shoot was quite a challenge. In the shot playing the violin, to project the elegance of a performance laced with the character's aloof disdain, I crossed my legs and let my weight settle naturally against the chairback. The red stripes across the Black stockings and the red high heels created a stunning visual elongation under the crimson light, instantly lengthening leg proportions. To capture that distant yet intensely focused expression of playing music, I closed my eyes to feel the melody, completely immersing myself in character. The photographer continually adjusted camera angles, shooting from a low angle to frame the instrument, metallic chair, and myself together into a frame of powerful dramatic tension.
Lighting synergy was another decisive key to these results. We placed multiple light sources across the studio, using broad washes of red light as the environmental base tone to build deep immersion. Meanwhile, warm yellow candlelight at the front provided key fill, illuminating facial nuances while imparting a luminous glow to the skin—especially across the collarbones and shoulders, maximizing dimensional depth. The silver throne, gilded mirrors, and candelabras reflecting off the red backdrop made the entire scene resemble a rich medieval oil painting. In post-processing, I intentionally preserved the crimson ambiance rather than over-brightening the scene, selectively accentuating the texture of the stockings and metallic accessories.
Every on-location or studio shoot feels to me like a brief character possession. Although posing in high heels and heavy garments is physically taxing, seeing the seamless harmony of light, shadow, and detail in the final frames makes every effort worthwhile. When attempting dark themes or narrative-driven concepts, I encourage everyone to experiment with lighting and props to amplify emotion—because truly memorable frames are always created by the interplay of light and subject.
