[Herta cosplay] Wisdom and Elegance in Honkai: Star Rail: Madam Herta's Studio Shoot Record

This shoot features Herta cosplay from Honkai: Star Rail, which took about two weeks from preparation to final retouched photos. The costume was custom-made by a tailor, with the key focus on the white embroidery patterns across the black corset. Those classic scroll and vine motifs are hard to reproduce via machine embroidery, so they were ultimately hand-stitched needle by needle; the symmetrical patterns across the chest and abdomen underwent three adjustments to achieve the desired three-dimensional depth. The hat presented the biggest challenge: featuring a wide black brim with blue patterned lining and white crests underneath, two layers of shaping mesh were built inside to support its structure, along with concealed clips to prevent it from slipping when worn. The silver-gray long wig was made of heat-resistant fiber, with bangs and sideburns carefully trimmed so that, paired with the hat, it neatly veiled part of the forehead to evoke an aloof, composed aura. The staff was custom-built by a prop maker; the blue shaft was primed with metallic paint, and the floral ornaments at the crown were resin-printed and hand-painted, giving it substantial weight in hand while serving as a steady support point during posing.

On the day of the shoot, we spent five hours in the studio—this outfit was indeed a test of stamina because tightening the black corset somewhat restricted breathing, and paired with knee-high boots and a long train, every change in posture required an assistant's help to readjust the skirt's drape. The rattan chair and blue-purple floral arrangements were provided by the studio, harmonizing seamlessly with the blue, white, and black palette of the Witch costume. The floor utilized highly reflective black mirror acrylic; the photographer and I repeatedly verified reflection angles to ensure visual balance between the subject and the reflection, especially when the staff was held diagonally, allowing the ground reflection to enhance the compositional depth. The first half-body close-up primarily emphasized facial nuance and hat-brim detailing, but considering the full display of the costume and props, the second full-body seated shot aligned closer with the original vision of this Studio photoshoot daily life project.

Speaking of character interpretation, Herta in Honkai: Star Rail is a scholarly figure of the Erudition path who carries an effortless, all-overseeing composure. Therefore, I kept my facial expressions and movements restrained rather than exaggerated, keeping my gaze directed steadily into the lens with subtle relaxation around the corners of my mouth. A two-light setup was used during the shoot: the key light came from the front-right to bring out the luster of the glossy black leather, while carving out rim highlights along the edges of the white lantern sleeves and skirt hem so the subject wouldn't get swallowed by the floral background. Post-processing mainly adjusted skin tone balance and fabric color saturation, striving to preserve the authentic texture of the textiles without excessive smoothing, retaining natural skin grain—because I believe the most captivating aspect of Cosplay photography is that genuine realism.

Regarding the footwear, the black lace-up high boots were modified from an existing pair with buckles and metal hardware added. Putting them on and taking them off was quite tedious, requiring five or six straps to be undone each time, but they visually elongated leg lines remarkably well and complemented the layered skirt hem. A small incident occurred during shooting when the crown piece of the staff was bumped off during a pose, but fortunately, the prop maker brought glue to fix it on the spot without delaying progress. The entire shoot felt like an authentic team collaboration—from makeup, styling, lighting, and staging to final photo selection, every stage is worth documenting. I am very satisfied with this photo set, particularly the composition of the second shot where the flower-draped rattan chair and mirror reflection evoke the witch's mystery without feeling oppressive. I hope everyone who sees this work feels my genuine dedication to this character.
