Teaming up with my bestie to cosplay Qingxiao and Hsin from Wuthering Waves at the Chengdu World Line Anime Exhibition, preparing these two looks took considerable dedication. Qingxiao's ensemble leans heavily toward an ethereal aura; to evoke the presence of a detached, aloof sword immortal, we invested extensive time sculpting the wig. The blue-black gradient hair had to be styled and defined lock by lock, while the horn ornaments and headpieces atop the crown required firmly anchored hairpins so they wouldn't shift around the convention floor. For makeup, I opted for cool-toned blue contact lenses paired with broadly blended blush and precise eye makeup, subtly elongating the eye shape to heighten that aloof composure. The costume's details were equally intricate—the beaded strands and tassels across the chest easily tangled during movement, demanding frequent repositioning.
My bestie's Hsin showcased an entirely contrasting vibe. Those massive black-and-white plush animal ears carried noticeable weight, leaving the neck quite sore after prolonged wear, so we quickly took them off during shooting breaks to massage our shoulders. Her red eye makeup and forehead mark lent the styling an enchanting vitality, while the red gem adorning her neck boasted great texture. Shooting on-site presented numerous challenges. The exhibition lighting was quite chaotic, so to achieve satisfying frames, we continuously scouted diverse angles and backdrops. To evade crowds, we often detoured to secluded outdoor hallways to borrow natural daylight. Because I held an aloof, serious expression while she channeled a spirited, captivating energy, facing each other often triggered bouts of laughter due to the sheer contrast, leading to multiple retakes.
Regarding outfit coordination and pose choreography, we spent long hours brainstorming. Being a two-person Bestie cosplay shoot, beyond exhibiting individual character traits, physical interaction was paramount—holding hands, leaning in to whisper, or striking a dynamic tension that felt both combat-ready and intimate before the lens. Due to venue warmth and costume constraints, larger movements easily creased the fabrics or frayed wig strands, keeping us busy in the rest lounge rescuing styles with combs and hairspray. Wigs ruffled by breezes and loose accessories are convention staples, so we constantly checked each other's backs for wardrobe malfunctions or slipping straps.
At this convention, we met many friends who love Wuthering Waves, with visitors enthusiastically approaching us for photos and exchanging insights on the characters. As cosplayers, bringing virtual figures into reality through wardrobe, makeup, and props while connecting with fellow fans who share this passion is deeply fulfilling. Though exhausting, seeing the captured frames inside the camera made every bit of effort worth it.
