[Umaru cosplay] Himouto! Umaru-chan's stay-at-home daily life: Snacking and gaming

Shooting Umaru's 'himouto' form this time was all about capturing that lazy, carefree vibe of staying home playing games and munching on snacks. Sitting cross-legged in front of the camera with Cola, potato chips, and a gamepad immediately set more than half the mood. However, during the shoot, I found recreating that round, chubby hamster face from the anime surprisingly challenging. Without deliberately tucking my chin in, the facial contours didn't look round enough and lacked that soft, moe anime charm, so a lot of time was spent adjusting angles. Tucking the chin slightly while focusing my gaze intently on the snacks made it feel much closer to that adorable, slightly goofy quality.

For the outfit, I chose the classic combination of the orange fuzzy hamster cape paired with a white T-shirt and red shorts. The orange cape not only looks cozy and warm in texture, but its high color saturation also pops vibrantly against the solid white backdrop. While the little ear design on the cape's hood is subtle, tilting my head slightly with it on instantly brought out an animal-like charm. The long straight blonde wig was a bit heavy; to complement the curves of the bangs and cheeks, the hair strands had to be adjusted subtly according to the camera's angle. Sitting barefoot cross-legged actually tests your core strength quite a bit, but to make the shot look natural and capture that completely unguarded, relaxed home state, this pose was definitely the best choice.

Arranging the props was also carefully planned. The Cola bottle on the left added a touch of everyday life, and the slightly messy snack bags scattered across the floor provided the exact sense of disorder that made the at-home atmosphere feel authentic. Placing the gamepad front and center also served as a great visual guide. The moment I brought a potato chip to my mouth required keeping a natural expression while minding my facial contour—it took many shutter clicks to finally capture a satisfying moment.

Lighting against a pure white background really puts details to the test, but fortunately the overall illumination stayed soft. While this high-key photography style can sometimes feel empty, it highlighted the subject and the colorful props wonderfully. The photographer made numerous height adjustments with the camera, as shooting at eye level versus slightly angling upward created distinct proportions. The dimensional wall between 2D and 3D is often bridged through these subtle camera movements and adjustments. Cosplaying this kind of everyday character doesn't demand exaggerated physical poses; an authentic, true-to-life state is often the most touching. Letting the character peacefully enjoy her snacks and games in her own world—this uninterrupted joy is the very core charm of being a 'himouto.'
