[Tsukatsuki Rio cosplay] Thick and Black aesthetics of the workplace in Blue Archive

For this cosplay photoshoot of Tsukatsuki Rio from Blue Archive, I chose to use the Thick and Black aesthetics as the core visual keynote. The very first moment I got the character design, I decided to interpret this classic combination of a black suit, white high-neck sweater, pleated skirt, and red-bottomed high heels with a strong workplace oppression and captivating sexiness. Not only the cut of the clothes, but the texture in the details is also crucial. For example, the choice of black stockings—I tried several thicknesses and finally chose this slightly sheer yet substantial style, paired with the details of garter straps. Sitting on the office chair, the leg lines naturally extend, and the overall visual effect is very crisp.

The halo and hairpin are key to character recognition. I handmade a transparent disc halo with red patterns, fixed to the top of the head with props. Although I needed to constantly pay attention to the angle during shooting, the floating feeling in the camera is indeed amazing. The wig was trimmed with blunt bangs, paired with red contact lenses, and the eye makeup focused on adding red blending to the lower eyelids, giving the gaze a bit more depth amidst the coldness.

The shooting location was chosen in an indoor studio with blinds and office equipment. To create a true office atmosphere, I prepared coffee cups, a laptop, folders, and English newspapers. Sitting on the black mesh office chair holding a coffee cup, crossing my legs, or sitting on the table holding a newspaper, these daily actions are precisely what best highlight the tension of this outfit. When stepping on the ground wearing red-bottomed high heels, or standing while hooking the shoe heel with one leg, that Thick and Black visual impact is fully displayed.

During the shooting process, I deliberately adjusted the center of gravity of my posture, such as keeping the spine straight and the shoulders leaning slightly backward when crossing my legs, which can better showcase the tailoring of the suit jacket and the texture of the black stockings. Shooting in black and white tones is classic, but adding a bit of warm light hitting the white wall next to it not only highlights the silhouette of the black suit, but also gives the image a temperature contrast. The whole scene has no complex backdrops; it is precisely to concentrate the visual focus on the clothing and body language.

The material and cut of this outfit demand high tolerance for movements. A slightly loose suit jacket can make the aura look stronger, and the drape of the pleated skirt is right above the knee, which visually lengthens proportions when paired with red-bottomed shoes. During shooting breaks, I repeatedly checked the position of the work ID badge, as well as that little bit of white edge on the collar and cuffs. For the character Tsukatsuki Rio, she possesses a rigorous, intelligent, and even somewhat aloof trait, so the emotion in front of the camera is also restrained—gaze straight ahead, no need for too many redundant expressions, resting one hand on the leg or adjusting the collar of the suit; these subtle movements can convey that rigorous yet attractive aura.

The logic of the entire shoot is: subtraction. Use the most basic black-and-white color scheme to tell a story of the workplace Thick and Black aesthetics style. A little less exaggeration in prop piling, a little more cooperation between clothing details and light and shadow. In the arrangement of the scene, office items are simply placed, and warm-toned light is used to reconcile the dullness of black, giving the image both an anime-style atmosphere and avoiding any sense of abruptness. The final effect presented by this work fits very closely with the visual imagination of the character in my heart, and also makes me feel the joy of interacting with the character in front of the camera. Throughout the shooting process, I was also repeatedly pondering how to respond through body language to that line: "I need a future where you are present, Sensei." This restrained yet tension-filled atmosphere is precisely the core I wanted to convey through the lens this time.
