[Alice Margatroid Cosplay] Touhou Project: Freezing the Doll-like Magical Girl in Light and Shadow

This cosplay styling for Alice Margatroid went through a lot of refinement in its details, from the initial costume drafting and fabric selection to the final shoot. The light blue layered skirt hem is made of a crisp, shimmering chiffon fabric, which, combined with the outer lace blouse and the inner petticoat, allows the entire skirt shape to maintain a full yet airy curve whether standing still or sitting down, perfectly embodying the gorgeous aesthetics of Lolita clothing. The off-the-shoulder design at the chest gracefully accentuates the neck and shoulder lines, while the white lace on the edges and the wine-red bows scattered in between create a soft color contrast.

In terms of props, this vintage grimoire is the core of the entire look. The dark cover features geometric textures and a gold-stamped magic circle, with red ribbons secured in a crisscross pattern. We strove to match the classical and heavy feel of the original setting, giving it a solid weight in hand and making it easy to coordinate with various posing demands.

To emphasize a doll-like refinement, I chose clear blue contact lenses paired with matching eyeshadow accents. While ensuring accuracy, I matched them with a low-saturation orange-red lip color. This combination avoids looking overly aggressive, retaining a touch of fragility that beautifully echoes the slightly curled golden blonde hair. During the shoot, the curls of the wig were carefully styled to ensure they presented soft layers and a natural, airy flow under the studio lights.

This set of photos was shot in a dark indoor studio, using two high-brightness vertical light tubes as background elements. This not only partitioned the visual structure of the space but also outlined a soft rim light around my silhouette, presenting a clean and translucent frame overall. In terms of posing, I experimented with various looks. The composition sitting on a black A-frame ladder is a set I am personally highly satisfied with. It not only visually elongated my leg lines but also highlighted the combination of the white fishnet stockings and lace-up chunky heels. Gently raising a leg with a playful touch, holding up the book, or quietly capturing a look back over my shoulder—all displayed different facets of the character.

During early preparation, I also ran into some wearing difficulties, such as the massive skirt hem making it quite tricky to climb up and down the ladder. But it is precisely the sense of ritual brought by this elaborate gear that gave me a more authentic experience during this portrayal. The grimoire in my hand was not just a prop but also helped me step into the intellectual and elegant state of the character much faster. In freezing each frame, I focused my attention on the coordination of my gaze, hand gestures, and props, hoping to capture the unique temperament belonging to this character. Although the shooting process required repeatedly adjusting details, the final film-like atmosphere fused with the lighting and background was the ultimate reward of participating in this cosplay.
