Working at a convention booth this time around, I wore this classic outfit of Kochiya Sanae. Since the original post mentioned 'being this cute, of course it's a boy,' today I'd like to share some insights on how a cute boy approaches styling this look.
First, regarding the costume: this blue-and-white shrine-maiden-inspired ensemble features a white top with delicate lace patchwork, trimmed with deep blue borders along the collar and cuffs, accented by a knotted blue cord at the chest. The skirt is vibrant blue patterned with white snowflake motifs, cinched at the waist with a dark belt and fine cord. To support the garment's layered silhouette without adding bulk, I wore a slim-fitting base layer underneath. Since guys typically have broader shoulders than girls, I utilized the puff sleeves and ruffled lace trims to soften the shoulder line, shifting visual focus to the overall silhouette. Cinching the belt firmly at the waist also helped balance body proportions.
Next, the makeup: convention hall lighting is usually quite harsh, so I opted for a long-wearing foundation with subtle shimmer to keep the face from looking flat or dull under high-wattage hall fixtures. The eyes were the main focus—using earth tones as a transition base with sweeps of red at the outer corners, paired with blue contact lenses to lend a softer, gentler gaze. The light green wig was pre-trimmed along the bangs and sideburns to contour cleanly to my face shape. For hair accessories, the snake-shaped hair clip on the left and the green frog plush hairpiece are the soul of the look; both were pinned securely with multiple bobby pins so they wouldn't dislodge while navigating crowded aisles.
For props, I prepped blank placards, a wooden staff, and several fortune-telling omikuji paper slips. The text on the slips was brushed in calligraphy with red ink stamps for authentic realism. While assisting at the booth, many attendees stopped by for photos; having these props gave natural motivation for hand placement and fostered delightful interactions.
Working a booth all day is physically demanding, especially layered up in full costume while keeping hair, makeup, and energy in check. Yet whenever fellow fans recognized the character or praised the styling effort, it made every second worthwhile. Regardless of gender, pouring genuine heart into costumes, props, and makeup while respecting canon design delivers wonderful results. I'm very pleased with these convention photos—capturing booth daily life alongside memorable interactions with the community.
