On the day of the shoot, we happened to catch the forest at its best lighting conditions. The black-and-white palette of this costume looked exceptionally photogenic against the lush green foliage and the warm yellow sunlight. The massive trees and fallen leaves provided a wonderful natural texture; leaning against the tree roots made me feel entirely immersed in the environment. To ensure optimal visual results, we scouted the location beforehand and specifically chose the 3:00 PM sunlight, as the scattered, dappled light created pronounced depth across the body. To faithfully recreate the state of focused reading from the canon lore, I had to pretend to be deeply engrossed in the prop book in my hand, spending quite some time adjusting the placement angle of the broom.
The photographer was very patient in guiding my poses to make my leg lines look more natural, capturing the light and shadow exquisitely in the side-sitting and tree-leaning shots. This type of Forest outdoor photo shoot poses a real challenge for on-site control because the background light source constantly shifts—as soon as the light angle changes, poses must be adjusted swiftly. The sunlight was quite intense that day, requiring constant attention to facial shadows, which kept the shooting rhythm fairly brisk. When the breeze stirred my long hair, we captured several lively snapshots; although some frames were discarded, the keepers turned out very satisfying.
Holding the broom required significant strength and control because the prop wasn't light, yet it had to appear effortlessly weightless on camera; holding it up for long periods left my arms a bit sore. Later, we moved beneath another tree, lowering my hat with sunlight falling across the skirt hem, evoking a charming magical girl daily life vibe. The long dress design is actually quite breathable, making moving through the woods comfortable, while the black-and-white scheme created sharp contrast against the surroundings. The makeup emphasized depth around the eyes, which, paired with the blonde wig, aligned closely with the character's temperament.
I really liked the pose lying on the ground with my hat tipped low because it felt very relaxed; even though the ground was slightly rough, the final visual effect was fantastic, making my legs look elongated. The photographer also suggested a shot looking up at the sky, where that quiet stillness seemed to slow down the entire frame. We shot for about two to three hours in total, switching through several locations to experiment with diverse compositions and angles. In particular, for the full-body standing shot, leaning the broom against the tree trunk while keeping myself firmly supported without blocking the sunbeam behind took a long time to settle. Stepping on soft, thick piles of fallen leaves made standing still for long durations prone to wobbling, requiring core stability throughout. We even joked on set about how heavy this broom was and how tiring it would be to actually fly with it.
Between takes, we figured out how to bring out the lace texture of the skirt hem, as the multi-layered fabric could easily blur without precise focus. In the sunlight, the skirt folds and edge lace patterns looked gorgeous; the backlit shots worked wonderfully, illuminating the blonde hair with luminous clarity. Styling took considerable effort, including the positioning of the headdress and the curls of the wig—details that ultimately determine whether the character's spirit comes through. I also loved the shots sitting on the ground reading with closed eyes because of their tranquil stillness. Although facial expressions were subtle, the hand placement and book prop styling made everything look completely organic. An outdoor location covered in fallen leaves is quite harsh on shoes and socks, leaving them covered in debris, but it was entirely worth it for great Cosplay photography. Overall, collaborating with the photographer on combining static reading moments with dynamic actions brought this photo set to life. Sharing this process for fellow fans of this style to reference!
