This shoot features Remilia from Touhou Project, a character I personally adore. To recreate her noble yet slightly devilish temperament, a lot of thought went into the makeup and styling. The wig was specially chosen in a light blue with a subtle sheen, trimmed with fluffy layers, and paired with her iconic pink-and-white dress. We did our best to perfect details like the tiered ruffles on the skirt hem and the red bows, channeling a classic Gothic Lolita vibe.
The shooting scene was arranged with a great sense of atmosphere. The black Gothic high-back throne, the red curtain backdrop, as well as the metallic birdcage and red apple props nearby—all these elements combined instantly bring you into the setting of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Regarding the lighting, I communicated with the photographer to use a dark-toned red light as the ambient light source, while supplementing a cool white rim light on the front of the character. This not only highlights the texture of the costume but also makes the skin tone look more translucent, giving the whole person more dimensionality in the frame.
For the leg-lifting sitting pose in the second picture, it actually took several attempts to find the balance point. Because the skirt hem is quite large, we needed to balance the character's elegance with the shape of the petticoat at the same time, but fortunately, the final effect turned out great. The most interesting part of shooting this kind of character is actually the control over details. For example, the little apple in my hand or those chibi plushies next to me—these accessories give the entire scene a stronger sense of storytelling.
Although my waist felt a bit sore after holding the poses for a long time during the shoot, seeing this retro and slightly dark fairy-tale style effect in the finished prints brings a great sense of accomplishment. Every time I shoot this style, I learn new techniques regarding light, shadow, and physical expression, and I hope to continue capturing the character's spirit even more accurately in future sessions of Anime-style photography and Vampire cosplay.
