This time at Firefly Comic Con, I went out with my Little Eggplant (Unicorn plush)! The weather was exceptionally good when shooting this set of photos; the sunlight and breeze were very cooperative, giving the entire frame a soft and fluffy atmosphere. To recreate Unicorn's quiet and slightly dependent personality from the game, I deliberately chose many casual and daily movements for my poses, such as spacing out while sitting on the steps, squatting down with a transparent umbrella, or simply tilting my head up to look at the sunlight. Since Unicorn is designed as a shipgirl who gets embarrassed easily but is very gentle at heart, I tried my best to keep my expressions soft, ensuring my gaze didn't have too much aggression. Emptying my mind a bit felt much more natural and fit the character better.
The details of this costume truly required a lot of thought, from the pink piping on the sailor uniform collar and the small anchor logo on the chest, to the fluffy decorations on the cardigan pockets—every single part matches the original design as closely as possible. The wig is a very special taro purple with a long, slightly curled ponytail. The hair ends have a gradient treatment, allowing the hair strands to reveal a very delicate sheen in well-lit areas. During the shoot, I brought along that iconic transparent umbrella and the unicorn plush; they weren't just props, but also the "switches" that helped me quickly enter the character's state—the moment I held the plush, I felt my demeanor naturally relax and loosen up.
In terms of lighting, backlighting and side-backlighting are perfect for this soft-girl style. Therefore, a few photos were specifically taken during the golden hour around 4 or 5 PM. With the sun shining from behind, a beautiful golden rim formed around the edges of my hair strands, instantly maximizing the visual quality of the frame. For the post-processing color grading, I didn't intentionally deepen the shadows or increase the contrast; instead, I preserved a translucent tone with a bit of a soft-light effect, which fits Unicorn's dreamlike aura much better. Because of the high accuracy of the props and costume, quite a few fellow fans came over to interact and chat on site. Everyone was extremely enthusiastic, and the entire shooting process was very joyful. The photographer's snapshots were also amazing, precisely freezing some fleeting micro-expressions and movements. I look forward to shooting more cosplay works with a sense of story like this in the future, presenting the delicate nuances of every 2D character.
