[Cheshire Cosplay] The Cheshire Cat in Azur Lane: Light and Breeze on a Royal Cruise Ship

This set of photos was shot on the deck of a British Royal-style cruise ship. Although the actual HMS Cheshire was scrapped long ago and finding a 1:1 historical set in reality is impossible, shooting on a cruise boat with a similar wooden deck and white railings largely fulfilled my expectations for the scene. The sunlight on the day of the shoot was fantastic—in fact, quite intense. The direct light hitting the white lace and the deck created the slightly overexposed, high-key style seen in the raw shots. In Japanese-style portrait photography, this high-brightness environment naturally brings about a dreamy, soft feel.

During the prep and styling, a lot of thought went into this blue-and-white Maid outfit cosplay. The cascading ruffles along the neckline and cuffs, along with the deep blue lace-up design on the back, added plenty of airy visual depth to the ensemble. The large headpiece adorned with bows and frills on top served as the true soul of the outfit, helping to hold the wig in place against the strong winds. For the lower body, the white stockings combined with these over-the-knee socks featuring subtle sheer seams, paired with chunky black leather shoes, made proportions look remarkably elongated on such a bright deck in this White thigh-highs outfit. I deliberately selected a glance-back composition as the cover photo, feeling it not only showcased the garment's rear construction, but also highlighted the lines of the legs and hosiery against the illuminated surfaces.

Because the wind on the deck was truly strong that day, the skirt hem kept billowing in the sea breeze. To capture this natural, dynamic liveliness, the photographer and I could barely stop clicking the shutter. Looking back at these frozen moments, I particularly love the lightness of the flying skirt. However, a high-key setting presents a challenge: the white glare on the deck was very strong, making the face prone to overexposure, so camera angles had to be adjusted constantly. Although wearing a layered outfit under the blazing sun felt a bit warm, it did not dampen my enthusiasm for this on-location Cruise ship photoshoot at all.

For this series, I have only polished these few images as a preview, while the rest are still undergoing post-processing adjustments. The focus of post-processing is mainly to tone down the sky highlights, bring out the clouds, and preserve the textures of the wooden floor and white metal railings, ensuring that while the image remains bright, shadow details stay crisp and the colors retain a warm nautical atmosphere rather than leaning too cool. In my view, Cheshire is precisely the kind of character who stays carefree and radiant under the afternoon sun. Standing on the deck while feeling the sea breeze enhanced my immersion in bringing the character to life; even without the original ship, the atmosphere and setting were more than enough to sink into her mindset.

This on-location shoot yielded so many satisfying photos. Remaining movement details around the seaside and inside the ship cabin haven't been released yet; I will retouch them gradually to keep the vibrant freshness of that moment in every final frame. Writing so much is simply to share the prep work and behind-the-scenes state with everyone.
