At the July 14th Overwatch Only event, I finally took out this D.Va Black cat skin fan outfit I put together a while back for a spin. The half-day itinerary was tightly packed yet deeply fulfilling, completing a simple set of Convention photos in a European-style indoor stairwell. The spiral staircase and black wrought-iron crystal chandelier in the shoot setting complemented this black-and-pink ensemble surprisingly well.
Choosing the D.Va Black cat skin this time stems from it being one of my absolute favorites in the game—second only to her default skin in my heart. The black cat theme endows the character with a playful yet subtly mysterious aura. Paired with a blonde twintail wig and the iconic black cat ears with pink ribbon hair accessories, I was quite satisfied with the overall fidelity. The costume has plenty of details: a glossy black bodice, a large pink bow at the neckline, and pearl chain embellishments at the waist. Combined, these elements grant the entire look both girlish charm and a cool edge. Naturally, to facilitate posing, I specially prepared a black-and-pink prop blaster; it had substantial heft in hand, and slightly tweaking my shooting stance produced great frames.
Arriving in the morning, the venue atmosphere was wonderful. Even though it was just a half-day event, the bustling excitement of everyone gathering rivaled major conventions. I browsed through various booths and secured the merchandise I had been longing for—Polaroids, badges, acrylic stands, and lanyards spread across the table were today's bountiful haul. In particular, that set of Polaroid shots turned out fantastic in texture despite my initial worries about lighting on site; whether posed group shots holding the blaster or candid snapshots sitting on the stairs, they are all full of commemorative value.
Regarding the outfit styling, the lower half featured red-and-black Argyle stockings paired with black leather shoes. The Argyle stockings visually possess strong tension, working with the layered black lace along the skirt hem to make the lower body silhouette appear more slender. Furthermore, while walking or sitting on the stairs, the diamond pattern created varied texture shifts under natural light—a low-key yet brilliant detail.
I'd also like to mention the wig and accessory coordination. Twintail styling in summer truly tests wig layering; to avoid a heavy look, I smoothed out flyaways on the crown before leaving, and slightly adjusted the placement of the cat ear clips to ensure they wouldn't tilt while walking. While the prop blaster was large, its center of gravity was well-balanced, so holding it one-handed during the shoot didn't strain my wrist too much.
The only regret from this Only trip was being unable to shoot across more scenes due to time constraints. For this Black cat skin outfit, I feel there's still ample room for creative expression—whether in a moodier, dimmer indoor set or a brighter outdoor backdrop, each should evoke a distinct atmosphere. Fortunately, I've already established a general concept, and with a full open schedule in the future, I will definitely book a photographer for a comprehensive official photoshoot, refining poses and expressions to align even closer with the character's persona.
Overall, this half-day trip was immensely fulfilling. Being able to wear the outfit of a character I love and connect with fellow fans of the work is the purest joy of D.Va cosplay. The happiness and passion are genuine, and I will continue to polish upcoming works, hoping to present an even more complete look next time.
